Pete Nagy already had run for three touchdowns among 20 total carries and also caught six passes, four of which resulted in first downs.

But as the Hanover Park senior geared up for the final play of yesterday's game against Chatham, foremost in his mind were two plays that he fell short of making on special teams. Photo Left: Nagy(22) Lays out and deflects the potential game winning field goal as time expires.

With them as motivation, the 5-9, 185-pounder blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt as time expired, saving his team's 20-19 victory at Cougar Field in Chatham.

"I was a hair away from blocking two extra points,'' he said. "So on the last play I knew that nobody was going to stop me.'' PhotoRight: Nagy just missing an early extra point.

Chatham took a 19-7 lead into the final quarter, but Nagy scored on a 6-yard run with just under eight minutes left and Jeremy Mota hit the extra point to draw Hanover Park to within five points. The 14-play, 67-yard drive had begun with under four minutes left in the third period, after a 40-yard punt return TD by Rob Guida had given Chatham a 12-point lead.

The Hanover Park defense then held Chatham to a three-and-out possession, leading to a 10-play, 56-yard drive that closed with Nagy's 1-yard, go-ahead TD run with 1:20 to go.

Nagy ended with 59 yards on 20 carries and caught six passes totaling 19 yards. The bulk of those receptions were on shovel passes from quarterback Glenn Paladino that resulted in short completions for first downs.

"The shovel pass has been a staple in our offense,'' Hanover Park coach Dan Gregory said. "Our kids did a good job running it and our line was great in reading it. That play probably bailed us out, along with the quarterback counter play.''

Paladino shook off a first half in which two of his passes were intercepted by Tom Fazio of Chatham. He ended 8-of-14 for 35 yards, with 12 keeps for 50 yards.

"The turnovers killed us early,'' Paladino said. "I just had to clear my head and do what I was coached to do.''

Chatham drew to within 7-6 after Chris Conroy scored from 3 yards on the first play of the second quarter and the home team extended its advantage to 13-7 at halftime after Hagens scored on a 2-yard run with 1:17 to go. Kyle McDonough of Chatham recovered a fumble on Hanover Park's next play from scrimmage, but a bad snap wiped out a 21-yard field goal attempt by Chatham on the final play of the half.

Hey I was thinking its about halfway through the season and it'd be fun to preview the state tourney since its the 1st year with the new format....

I used all sorts of criteria including

1) Head to Head2) Common Opponents3) League Placement4) Strength of Schedule

I included teams that are under 500 as of now but have a pretty good shot of either making it to 500 or garnering an at large...in parochial there's 1 outside gordon, in public A there is 8 under 500, and public b there are 3.

They will be posted in 3 separate posts because of character length.

Realignment

The Star Ledger gave their best shot at a Realignment Plan, probably taking into consideration the entire state and not just your (or my) school. My guess is that from here on in, no one will be happy and the public schools will end up getting the shaft with all in favor of the private's wishes. Just be careful what you wish for ...

Mo-Beard Girls Hockey

Ask a Morris County Hockey fan to name the undefeated teams still left in Morris and they’ll probably get two out of three correct. Actually, they may not even know about the third. Sure, Kinnelon and Roxbury have unblemished records as of January 6th, but look no further and I’ll let you in on a little secret.

Morristown-Beard’s girl hockey program currently stands at 7-0-1 about one-third through the way through the season. More impressively, the Crimson have recorded four shutouts through December and have knocked down two consecutive shutout victories. The ladder, a 3-0 win at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

The Crimson, lead by head coach Bruce Driver, have built up an early lead in the WIHLMA League. Morristown-Beard, 6-0-1, has a three point lead over Portledge, who they defeated 4-3 in the season opener. Portledge has only played four conference games and Shady Side, who is currently in fourth place with 1 point, has only played one, yes one, conference game thus far.

League play-offs to be held at Shady Side Academy on February 16-17, 2008 will include teams finishing 1-4 playing in the championship round and teams finishing 5-8 playing in the consolation round.

Standout keeper Allie Maffei has started six games in met and is 5-0-1 on the season only allowing five goals, while establishing an impressive 94.7% save percentage.

Seventeen Crimson players have already recorded a point or more on the season. Through seven games, two underclassman have emerged as the goal scoring leaders. Freshman Sarah Bayersdorfer and sophomore Katie Paine, both forwards, have found the net 13 and 5 times, respectively. Bayersdorfer adds 3 assists to her give her 14 points on the season while Paine has 5 assists for a total of 10 points.

Sophomore Samantha Vicari (3G, 6A) is third on the team in points with nine. Gina Maffei has a knack for setting up goals with 8 points. Junior defenseman, Lavinia Kronberg, freshman Alyssa Bufis and senior Brittany Deventer all have seven points.

You can see the Crimson Monday, January 7 against Summit. They also face Pingry on January 10^th and Canterbery on the 16^th. These home games are held at Twin Oaks at 5:15.

Morris Knolls Holiday Tournament Final Day Recap

Game 1: Mountain Lakes Whips Parsippany Hills, 58-52

In opening game of the final round of the Morris Knolls Holiday Tournament, Mountain Lakes cruised to 58-52 victory over Par Hills. Mountain Lakes controlled the first three quarters but in the final session, the Vikings closed the gap to make the score less lopsided.

After a 12-11 Herd lead back and forth first quarter, Mountain Lakes pulled ahead with an aggressive defense. That defense produced four steals in the second quarter that helped to propel the Herd to a 19-8 advantage in the second quarter. The Lakes defense forced the Vikings to long jumpers and those misses lead to easy points for the Herd. The score at half time was 31-19 Mountain Lakes.

In the third quarter, Parsippany Hills employed the full court press in an effort to cut into the deficit but the press proved ineffective due to the arm of Jake Tripucka. As the inbound man, Tripucka launched long full court passes that gave his team easy buckets. The third quarter ended with Mountain Lakes on top 44-29.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings began to mount a comeback but it was too late. Despite over ten points from Greg Solimine in the final few minutes. The final score was 58-52, which was much closer than the game itself.

Mountain Lakes prevailed due to a stingy, hustling defense and an efficient offense. Chase Winter added ten for the Herd and Tripucka added 15 points and six assists to the cause. Parsippany Hills struggled all game offensively missed jump shots and lay-ups. Solimine finished with 23 points most of them in the final period.

Morris Hills Wins Championship in a Thriller

In the de facto, championship of the Morris Knolls Tournament, Morris Hills beat Jefferson 57-56 in the battle of the only 2-0 teams in the tournament. This game went back and forth especially in the final quarter.

In the opening stanza, Morris Hills jumped out with an 11-1 run to open the game. The main method of scoring was dribble penetration and quick pass for an easy lay-up. Jefferson managed to score some points and bring the score to 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second frame, the Falcons got on track as Derek Hall got open for a few easy baskets. Jefferson won the quarter, 14-7, but the Knights were leading the half 26-25.

In the third quarter, Morris Hills regained their dribble drive scoring touch as the outscored Jefferson in that period, 12-9, and lead 38-34 entering the climatic fourth quarter.

In the final period, the Falcons opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to give them a 44-40 edge. Jefferson extended their lead to nine with three minutes left in the game. Then, the Knights began their march back. Andy Katz was on fire nailing three consecutive three pointers. Jack Champion answered with two threes of his own. Next with one minute to go, Katz missed a three but Justin Doniloski drove the lane to bring the score to 56-54 with thirty tics left. Jefferson inbound but with ten seconds left, John Hiland was fouled. He missed both free throws, and then the Knights got the rebound but fumbled it out of bounds. Jefferson inbounded again and Mike Kern was fouled with 6.6 seconds left. He missed both foul shots and Doniloski got the rebound. He then raced down the court and near – but what looked like inside - the three-point stripe, he launched up a shot as he fell towards his right. The shot hit the rim and went in as the buzzer sounded. Right after, the officials gathered and decided that the shot counts and would be worth three points, giving Morris Hills the win and tournament title, as the players celebrated. Jefferson had missed three shots in the final quarter before missing four straight foul shots with under tens seconds to go in the game.

Jefferson falls to 4-2 and Morris Hills is now 6-0. Jefferson was lead by Hall’s 24 points and Champions’ 12. Morris Hills was paced by Katz’s 13 and Doniloski’s 14. Morris Hill might challenge for the Iron Hills basketball title as they did for football and soccer.

Montville Overcomes Morris Knolls, 53-50

Montville battled back from a half time shortfall to beat the tournament hosts in the last game of 2007 in Morris County. Montville’s comeback was due to a control of the glass, rebounding Knolls by a wide margin.

In the first quarter, the Golden Eagles harassed the Mustangs and forced turnovers. The Knolls defense was swarming to the ball and that lead to easy buckets for the home squad as they jumped out by an 18-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the following period, both teams were cold as ice from the field, struggling to score many points. After a 10-9 Montville favored quarter, the game went to the half with score 27-19 Golden Eagles.

In the third session, Montville came out hot with an 8-3 scoring run right out of the gate. Montville then applies some of the pressure they faced early towards their opponents. This strategy worked causing turnovers and preventing the home squad from clicking offensively. The Golden Eagles despite playing on their home court struggled to get a bounce from the rims. Montville tied the game, 35-35, at the end of the quarter on a Joe Kim buzzer beating three pointers.

In the fourth quarter, Montville used their rebounding advantage by scoring multiple second and third chance points. In the first three minutes, Montville had built a five-point lead that remained until the final minute of the game. Morris Knolls made it a one-possession game twice in the final minute but Montville made their foul shots to preserve the 53-50 lead.

Montville was without their leading scorer, Travis Warech, for the entire tournament and only managed to win one game. Montville was lead by Ryan Gajdos who scored 18 points and had four steals. Morris Knolls was paced by JJ Boylan who chipped in ten points.

Morris Knolls hosted a great tournament, the facilities were great, the food and service at the snack bar was great, and the basketball was fun to watch. Good Luck to all teams in 2008.

In the opening game of the JP Flynn Memorial Tournament, Sparta won the battle of blue colored schools with a strong third quarter. Delbarton hosted this opening round game and is a competitor.

The first half was back and forth affair with Sparta taking the early edge, 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Randolph edge back with a flurry of fast break points to combat a steady dose of Sparta threes. At the half, the score was 29-27 Spartans.

In the second half, the Rams had a quick 7-2 run to take the lead off more fast breaks. After a well-placed timeout, Sparta answered with a decisive 11-1 run to put the Spartans up for good. Sparta’s half court offense was unstoppable, with each trip down the court lead to two or more points for the Spartans, but the Ram’s offense was struck in rut each time they had to slow their pace down. The majority of Randolph’s scoring came on contested jumpers or tough drives to the hoop. Meanwhile, Sparta had easy lay-ups and open looks most trips down the court. Sparta outscored Randolph 21-14 in the third period. In the fourth quarter, despite a press defense

Randolph could not close the gap.

Randolph was paced by Kyle Aiken’s 21 points and hopes to rebound in the next round. Sparta was lead by Brendan Rezny and Nick Lenker and hopes to carry over their momentum to another victory.

Chatham 64-47 Mendham

Chatham defeated Mendham in IHC-Hills Division play tonight in Chatham. The defending champion Cougars improved to 2-0 in conference play and 2-1 overall. Although it’s difficult to tell from the box score, Mendham kept pulling within low single digits during each of the 1st three quarters. Chatham erupted out of the gate for a quick double digit lead, but Mendham stormed back. Each Minuteman was quickly snubbed the Cougars. Mendham was able to get within five midway through the third.

Mendham put up a tough fight for most of the game but in the end, Chatham led by Billy Oliver was too much to handle. In their home environment with their crowd behind them, the Cougars showed a relentless Mendham why it will not be easy to beat the defending Morris County Tournament champions this season. Oliver, the 6-foot-8 senior who has committed to play at Penn State next year, finished with 22 points after a slow start. Mendham kept Oliver scoreless in the 2nd quarter and the senior had seven in the 1st half. Mendham’s leading scorer was Rob Berish, who also finished with 22 points. Josh Toolajian added 14 points for Chatham while Mark Cisco ended up with 10 points for Mendham. Although Chatham led throughout the game Mendham was in contention until the last four minutes, when the Cougars pulled away to win by 17 points.

Preliminary Seeds – all weigh classes will be re-seeded after weigh-ins on Saturday Morning. As you know with these pre-seeding meetings, they rarely ever hold up, especially on opening weekend.

The 1^st weekend tournaments are always fun because you get your 1^st look at a new line ups. With the new certification procedure, some wrestlers maybe up a weigh class.

103:

How many: 6 wrestlers; four freshmen, two sophomores.

Who did what: Sophomore Zach Zotollo from Paramus was seeded 1^st and is the only wrestler with Varsity experience going 4-0 as a freshman.

The skinny on 103: Always fun, the opening tournament 103 where everyone is eager to see the future stars of the program. (6)Dave Cholish is a familiar name from West Morris and (2)Nick Giordano of Hanover Park was a strong Tri-County wrestler. Giordano could add to the strong 103-line at HP over the past two years, following Charles Savino and Angelo Licata.

The skinny on 112: (2)Angelo Licata – Hanover Park, who was a 2005 HP tournament finalist at 103 as a freshman, is the #2-seed. Licata missed all of his sophomore season due to an illness.

Who did what: 2006 HP Tournament Champion Joe Ortiz of Paramus is the #1-seed. Ortiz was the ‘06-‘07 Region II champion, doing so on a 3-1 decision over Vinnie Fava of Don Bosco. Fava won District 5 with an 8-6 victory over Ortiz.

The skinny on 119: Definitely the strongest weigh-class in the lower weights. Senior (3)Nate St. Elme of Rahway (3^rd at 103 last year); (2)Jordan Toma of Hanover Park and (4)Nick Esemplare of Pequannock (4^th at 112 last year) are all possibilities to advance to the finals.

Who did what: Mike Quinn of Pascack Valley is the #1-seed. Quinn was 31-5 last year, champion of District 8 & finishing in 4^th place in Region II.

The skinny on 125: (2)Charles Savino – Hanover Park makes the jump from 103. Savino and (3) Mark Flemming (112) of West Morris were both 2^nd place finishers last year. Freshman (6) Sean Affilto of Pequannock was a strong Tri-County contender last year.

Who did what: Marc Cirello of Paramus, the #1-seed went 25-14 in ‘06-’07 – 2^nd place finisher is District 5 last year – HP tourn: 3^rd place at 119 last year.

I cannot tell you how much I really enjoy working on this site, but what has amazed me the most is how much I have really enjoyed picking up photography as a hobby. While working on Winter Sports Web Pages, I realized how greatly improved the photography on this site actually is. I really thought I was happy with the SONY Cybershot, which is simply a great point-and-shoot camera. But after moving on to the Canon Rebel Xti and learning all about lens, I really how vast and complex the world of photography really is. Now that I have moved up to the Canon 40D, I am really learning so much about all the features of a professional camera. And let me tell you, I am only working with the tip of the ice berg.

Now that I am quite comfortable working with outdoor sports, we’re moving indoors for the winter. One thing I did learn and it’s actually a huge tip no matter what camera you are using – make sure that the sun is at your back.

Swami Vs. Coach One More Time As We Get Set For Playoff Finals!

The Coach’s (53-15 – 78%) final comments : Yes, It is true … I blew it. I had the Swami right where I wanted him. I had his magic carpet in one hand and a lasso around his crystal ball in the other, but I let go and he does what any good team will do come playoff time … he made me pay. To the Swami I say – We’ll done, Sir! But I do have one last chance so here’s my best shot! Just for the record, I am at 77.94% which is right in the same neighborhood as the legendary Bill Born’s super system: (1420 - 381) 78.84% Ok, Mr. Born has a few more games in, but his site is awesome and adds a nice flavor to High School Football and Basketball. In all reality, You can call me Mendham. I am banking on two huge upsets, Wayne Valle and St. Pete's - then if I get those two, hoping and praying that Mo. Hills is Mo-Better! I called they Vegas and they will not even give me odds, they say the chances of me winning are "off the board." Ho-hum!

Unlike some weeks during the regular campaign, when the Swami and Coach saw eye-to-eye on many a contest, this week, I do believe, will provide you with unique analysis and, perhaps, a couple of surprising choices. So, without further adieu, one more trip above the clouds, and then through the chilly, late fall air, to the Meadowlands, and beyond!

Friday night:
Morristown Beard vs. Paterson Catholic, Non-Public, Group 1
The Coach: One of the two remaining schools from Morris County that have a shot at winning a title! I guess you cannot say enough good things about Mo-Beard, their staff and the seniors that have brought the Crimson to Giants Stadium. Not only that, but a fruit basket should also be sent to Tony Sorrentino who rebuilt this program from noting just two years ago. The Crimson’s football program has come a long way since they had to end their season – mid-season – due to lack of players. But no more mushy stuff – this is the state finals! Let’s be honest, Undefeated Paterson Catholic is more like a Group 4 School and one that handed Pompton Lakes a 41-0 loss. The Cougars have outscored their last three opponents, 128-7. Ouch! The Born Power Index.com has Morristown-Beard 44.3 and Paterson Catholic 79.6 that means that Pat-Cath is a 35.5 point favorite in this game. Listen, as a Mine Hill resident, I want nothing more than a Mine Hill Kid to lead his team to a state title. I used to love seeing Dover in the state finals back in the early 80’s – but – I am a realist. Not only am I taking Pat-Cath, but I am laying the points. Paterson Catholic 48-0.

The Swami: Mo-Beard first-year Coach Steve Romano has been hanging around too long with his old Bloomfield buddy T.K. Tripucka trying to improve his already impressive stand-up comedy routine. But, seriously, now, the colorful Romano did one heck of a job in terms of oratory prowess in convincing his Crimson kids that they could indeed make the playoffs with a strong finish this fall. Then, he had them realize that a win on the road at defending Group 1 champion St. Mary’s of Rutherford was within their grasp, and they pulled that off. However, even the best Romano routine is going to be needed here. Don’t even bother with the Born index boys, this is as tough as it gets. Benjie Wimberly and Paterson Catholic were already talented and then they added Hudson Catholic transfer Calvin Brownridge as a skill kid plus Paramus Catholic transfer Wayne Mack at quarterback in October. Enough is enough already. PC has a 320-pound defensive tackle in Joseph Thompson who can absolutely pound people. We are impressed with the talents of Mo-Beard WR Colin Larmond, QB Mike Betz and RB Dan Ingraldi, but there is just way too much talent on the other side of the ball. Paterson Catholic 42-14.

Wayne Valley vs. Wayne Hills, North 1, Group 1
The Coach: This is pretty cool. I actually wish I lived in Wayne for 1 day! These rivalries make the entire outlook of the game change. You’re talking 22 wins and 837 total points by these two Wayne Schools! Sounds like fun! I really need to decide if I want to play for percentage here and pick the team I’d like to win, or go for with the pick against what the Swami will choose – I’m all about me! (Born rating: Wayne Hills 103.1 -- Wayne Valley 86.0) Wayne Valley in the upset, 28-24

The Swami: As I try to keep up with the traffic that speeds up Valley Road in Wayne at about 45 miles per hour on a ridiculously narrow 4-lane road, it’s always time to return to the magic carpet, just past the home of the Indians as you head up the hill, cross Hamburg Turnpike and head all the up to Berdan, hang a left, and go to the home of Chris Olsen and the Patriots. I always get a kick out of the Wayne Boys Club and PAL junior football teams, which every year seem to send one of their teams to the North Jersey Junior Football League championships. Heck, current NFL tight end Greg Olsen worked his way up the ladder from junior football to Wayne Hills, and there are many more talented Patriots who have followed him. But, the story here is neighborhood rivalries and friendships merging together on a special night at Giants Stadium. We’re impressed with the job Brian O’Connor has done with Valley, highlighted with star studded players such as RB Matt Dortch and D-1A tight end Chris Pantale. But, this is still Wayne Hills. The Pats have won 39 in a row for a season. They are not spectacular, but incredibly efficient and resistant on ‘D.’ TB-LB Dan DeCicco is solid, QB Mike Giampapa gets the job done and a wealth of role players are there to chip in. In the end, make it 40 straight! Wayne Hills 27-21.

Saturday:

Don Bosco Prep vs. St. Peter's Prep, Non-Public, Group 4
The Coach: Born has Bosco -3 – I’ll take St. Pete’s plus the 3 … ok, the Swami will not partake in any wagering or point laying, but non the less, I am all about me. And to be quite honest, if SPP did not play Delbarton on opening day, I would not have seen, read about or even thought about either one of these two schools. Like it or not, I am Morris County Guy and what happens in schools that do not extend into our playing area, well, I do not reeally keep up on them ... it is what is it is. The Bergen Papers, Press, MSG – these teams are for those guys. I have a feeling that the Super Swamm is taking Bosco, so I am banking on the Boy’s from St. Pete’s. St. Peter’s 27-21

The Swami: You’re right old Coacharoo!...This is an obvious favorite to stick by. And, why not? Like Wayne Hills, Bosco might not be as star-studded as past Matt Simms and Justin Trattou teams, but with the dynamic sophomore runner Tony Jones, and capable alternatives such as Dillon Romaine and rugged Guy Germinario, the Ironmen have loads of answers. Everone respects the abilities of Peters’ Will “The Thrill” Hill, who will probably one day play for a national championship team at Florida. But here, in his final high school game with the Marauders, he may have his moments of glory, but in the end, the powerful Bosco machine simply marches on. I mean, how many high school teams have two Division I caliber placekickers, as Bosco has in Hofstra-bound Brian Hanley and unsung Pat Murray. Have to pick with the Toalmeister again. Don Bosco 31-17.

Sunday:

Cedar Grove vs. Belvidere, North 2, Group 1 ( Rutgers Stadium)

The Coach: Ahh – football the way I like. These kids all grew up together. They know the value of a home town and despite the massive amount of hate mail I received for asking Cedar Grove to change their mascot – well – the state needs to step in here. Both of the schools should be mandated to change their Mascots! Cedar Grove should adopt the Grover from Sesame Street and the County Seaters ... well … they need to adopt anything but that. You know you’re tough when your mascot is a politician! If Cedar Grove had considered renaming themselves the Cegar Grove(r) Clevelands, like I had suggested as option #2 way back when they may have a good chance here, but no such luck! On a serious note: Look at Belvidere’s scores – they give up field goals and that means something. Bending, but not breaking ... but hmmm …Cedar Grove has a handful of single digit allowed games. Tough call here. Hope this one goes into many overtimes … Belvidere 21-17 in overtime (after being tied 7-7)

The Swami: I would never count out the Panthers of Cedar Grove, who have one of the best coaching staffs in New Jersey, and, as the Coach mentioned, a nucleus of kids who have grown up together. They’ve played football, basketball, baseball and some have wrestled. It’s that type of old-fashioned, 3-sport, Group 1, public school town with a ton of pride. Players such as 6-4 QB Steve Adams and clutch RB Mike Risimini have had solid seasons along with a host of other terrific role players and top-notch defenders like LB Doug DiMattia and DL Brian Tobia. But, the County Seaters have their own talented arsenal, led by QB Ian Schreffler and RB Mike Mottola. It’s a very tough call here, but Belvidere’s somewhat tougher big games could help it in a tight spot, which I think will occur here in a nail-biter. Belvidere 20-17.

Montclair vs. East Orange Campus (North 1, Group 4)
The Coach: EO has jumped off the top turn-buckle and landed a flying elbow to my brow! Yessir. Those are the two key losses I blame for my deficit to the Schwam! Knolls had them – twice. But more importantly, Knolls was driving down and ready to take a 21-12 lead, when … FUMBLE! Huge turning point. EO can move the ball, but had to revert to two halfback passes in order to over take Knolls. That will not work against a battle tested and air-attacked Montclair. Plus, East Orange cannot kick the extra point. That’s like playing Roulette and laying your money on 1-13 every spin. Montclair 25-12

The Swami: Having had the opportunity to watch both teams up close in the span of about 15 hours, it’s obvious that each can be both explosive and mistake-prone at the same time, dual action that can produce a very exciting contest in this type of setting. It will be cold and windy and how well East Orange Campus can pass the ball across the field in such conditions remains to be seen. Super soph Quadir Pendleton has nerves of steel and a wealth of weapons, including clutch wide out Akeem Cunningham. But, the Mounties might have some kharma here. Two years ago, the current seniors were beaten by an older and better Morris Knolls team in this same spot. Now, those 10 th graders are experienced and battle tested, and they’ve been through their own ups and downs. This particular Montclair team has some of the best character of any Mountie squad in recent memory, and players such as QB Marlon Calbi, WR-DB Jimmy Pitts, TB-LB Tahron Green, G-DE Scott Smith, TB-DB Terrence Munford and TE-DE J.B. Barnes have been there and done that. Except, now, they have to beat the young guns of E.O.C., which they will, by the whisker of an Arman Walia field goal. Montclair 24-22.

Morris Hills vs. West Essex (North 2, Group 2 )
The Coach: You would think I would have A LOT to say about this game. I do. But the most important thing I know is that Droz and his staff is ALWAYS ready for the playoffs. Sabo has his kids living the moment. They know they are making history. West Essex is in the midst of a dynasty. We can talk history – after all I played in the 1 st IHC game between West Essex and Morris Hills. It was at West Essex on Thanksgiving in 1988. Dave Young scored 5 TD’s. The best WE-HP game ever … a year later as we had to shovel the football field. FIVE inches of snow on Thanksgiving made for one of the most fun games ever. I swear that everyone just ran to the sidelines and waited to be tacked in the snow banks … either way Mo Hills won both - oops – back to 2007. MH will need that superman effort if they hope to take down West Essex and disrupt the dynasty. Morris Hills needs not to get caught up in the mystique of Giants Stadium. They cannot let Wessex take the opening drive to the house. As the MH-Chatham games ended, I received a text asking me for my prediction of the West Essex – MH state final. I’ll give the same answer I gave that chap … No one scores 21 on West Essex – but I am still going with my Scarlet Knights: Morris Hills 14-13.

The Swami: Ah, a very brave prediction by The venerable Coach, who in his final pick of this week and this year, sticks with the nostalgic choice. Oh, how touching!...But, alas, no matter how potentially right on he may be with selecting his alma mater to prevail by a point, remember this: West Essex rarely loses in this spot. In fact, in eight finals, they’ve won six titles. And, they’re shooting for five in seven years, almost unheard of achievement by a public school in this day and age when competing year-in and year-out as a Group 2 is a major challenge. Coach Drozjock and his staff have put together another lock-down defensive unit, one which has posted seven shutouts and is as tough to score as any team in Essex County. Now, I expect Morris Hills to play a far better game than it did back on Sept. 28 when it lost by three touchdowns to the Wessex Knights. A team with red in its color scheme will win here in the windy home of the Giants and Jets, but that team will also have black uniforms (even though I remember a more innocent time when Wessex was a much more pristine red and white). Enough fashion statements. The truth is, the Knights will prevail, the Wessex Knights that is. West Essex 14-7.

EAST ORANGE - In his four years as the East OrangeCampus head football coach Marion Bell has been knocking on the door while making the playoffs each and every season at the helm.

Now, he wants to see his team kick the door wide open.

Buoyed by two impressive second-half drives, one of which followed a turnover and was turned into a subsequent game-winning touchdown march, the Jaguars earned a first-ever trip to the playoff championship game with a pulsating 20-14 semifinal victory over Morris Knolls on Friday night before 2,000 fans at Paul Robeson Stadium.

“It feels real good and I’m proud of my coaches, who have spent so much time preparing for each game, and, of course, for the kids, who worked so hard and persevered,” said Bell. “Yeah, we’ve been knocking on that door and we certainly want to kick it in by winning a championship in two weeks!”

East Orange (10-1) will meet Saturday’s Ridgewood-Montclair winner in the North 1, Group 4 final, probably at Giants Stadium the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

In a game where Jaguar standouts such as sophomore quarterback Quadir Pendleton, wide out Akeem Cunningham and wide receiver-safety Carlo Thomas all made big plays, it started out as a case where Morris Knolls was dominating on the ground for the game’s first half.

In fact, the Golden Eagles’ Kellan Cardio couldn’t believe how wide the alleys were that his Morris Knolls offensive line was creating as he and Frankie Trivigno were amassing impressive chunks of yardage on the ground against East Orange.

However, just one critical turnover was all that would matter as East Orange took full advantage of its golden opportunity, mounting a critical third-quarter drive off a fumble return en route to its victory.

“We were running through them like butter,” said Cardio, who finished with 24 carries for 95 yards, while Trivigno (13 for 180) was also breaking free for long gainers of 28 or more yards on four different rushes. “One turnover, which occurred when we thought we were going in to build our lead turned out to be huge.

“You have to give East Orange credit for taking advantage of what we gave them, but we felt like the game was there for us to win and we just couldn’t finish tonight.”

Morris Knolls, which also lost at East Orange, 26-17, two weeks ago in a final regular season game, finishes the season at 7-4.

The Golden Eagles led, 14-12, and were in the midst of an impressive 84-yard drive from their own 3 to the East Orange 13 on their first possession of the second half when the key turnover occurred. In a game where the veer’s familiar option pitch was rarely needed due to the huge holes for runs up the middle all night long for Cardio and Trivigno, its use in a rare instance at a key juncture turned out to be an event of misfortune for the Golden Eagles.

An errant pitch on a first-and 10 at the East Orange 13 was scooped up by the Jaguars’ Carlo Thomas at his own 5 and returned to the 25, setting the stage for a game-changing, 10-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by Hakeem Harvey’s 4-yard touchdown run with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

With a successful two-point conversion pass, East Orange took a 20-14 lead that would hold up.

“We were rolling before that fumble,” said Morris Knolls linebacker John Cordasco. “Watching our offense run the football so well against their defense for the first three quarters just made us feel we were in a good position to win the game, but, unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be.”

As an impressive follow-up to what proved to be its winning touchdown drive, East Orange mounted yet another time-consumming march down the field, eating up 8:50 of the fourth quarter as it ran 19 plays and moved from its own 13 to the Morris Knolls’ 16.

Although the drive ended with a fourth down incomplete pass, the damage had been done as the Golden Eagles had just 2:20 left in the fourth in order to try and mount a last-ditch drive to tie or win the game in regulation.

“At that point we were just trying to run out the clock,” said Bell. “If we scored, fine, but we wanted to keep control of the football and just knock off minutes, which we did.”

A 19-yard run by quarterback Nick DeRosa to his own 31 followed by the Golden Eagles’ first completion of the night with 1:13 left, an 8-yard toss from DeRosa to Ben Margolit, spurred Morris Knolls as it eventually moved to the Jaguars’ 48 on its last-ditch effort in the waning moments. However, a sack of DeRosa by East Orange defensive tackle Julio Geronimo for a seven-yard loss with 5.2 seconds left followed by a pass interception by East Orange’s Akeem Cunningham on the game’s final play closed the door on Knolls’ hopes and their season.

“I felt like I needed to make a play at that point and the sack felt great,” said Geronimo. “Our entire defense stepped it up on the second half and I think our depth may have worn them down a little in the fourth quarter because we had a lot of guys going one way and most of their guys were out on the field the whole time.”
Meanwhile, Knolls finished an eventful season in a very entertaining game, albeit in a loss to a very talented East Orange team.

“We had a great year with a lot of exciting games like this one, but it’s very disappointing to lose in the playoff semifinals,” said Cordasco, who helped lead a spirited effort by the Knolls defense. “We gave it our all out there tonight, but just came up a bit short.”

East Orange, led by its impressive sophomore quarterback Quadir Pendleton (8-of-15 for 103 yards and a touchdown), went on top 6-0 with 2:07 left in the first quarter on a beautiful 19-yard fade pass to Thomas in the left corner of the end zone to finish a 8-play, 73-yard drive.

Morris Knolls responded with an 11-play, 70-yard march capped by Cardio’s 1-yard TD run. Leo Trinidad’s first of two successful extra point placements game the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead with 10:51 left in the second quarter.

East Orange re-took the lead on a 38-yard option pass from Cunningham to Thomas with 6:47 left in the half for a 12-7 advantage, capping a 7-play, 66-yard advance.

Morris Knolls took a 14-12 halftime lead on DeRosa’s 1-yard QB sneak with 3:03 left in the half to finish a strong 10-play, 71-yard drive.

Morris Knolls, which had a 311-173 edge on the ground on the night, held a resounding 179-57 rushing edge at halftime.

The Jaguars had 166 yards through the air to only 15 for the Golden Eagles.

The Coach’s Comments: Finally, I closed the gap, I scratched, I clawed … and YES!! I am finally even with the ultimate Swami. All tied up at 50-12, that's about 81% for all you non-math majors! But, I know not to count my chickens … or in this case, footballs … making picks this week is a little trying, and tons of research has gone into this analysis. Unfortunately, as most of you know, I do teach at Hanover Park and actually teach many football players, so to avoid hometown cooking (or souring), I have asked the great Swami to yield away from this IHC rematch. Now off to my picks …

The Swami: The secret is out! The venerable and erstwhile Coach, once hidden in some back room closet during lunch hour to hide his identity to the main student populace at Hanover Park-most of whom by the way read this weekly attempt at scholastic pigskin prognostication-is now a known entity at a particular Morris County high school. Tomorrow he’ll be signing autographs during home room. But, not so fast, the immortal Sideline Swami, with freshly glazed crystal ball, sewn turban in place, magic carpet dry cleaned and ready for takeoff, is set to soar back in the lead with his picks as the playoff semis take center stage this weekend. The Coach may be known to some now, but he’s simply an intrusive opposite number in the forecasting game where everyone knows “The Swami Rules!”

Friday night:
North 1, Group 4 -- Morris Knolls at East Orange (rematch #1)

The Coach: I was all over the Eagles two weeks ago when I was sure that Knolls would take down the Easterners of Orange, but alas, our 17-point halftime time was squashed. The campus rolled off 26 straight points en route to a stunning victory over the veer-y-perfect Eagles. The good news for East Orange is that they were able to face the “live” veer for 48 minutes, just two weeks ago. The bad news is that one of the best coaches in the state walks the Eagles sidelines and the Eagles will be ready to win this one! Morris Knolls advances 24-15

The Swami: We don’t believe a single coach has ever defeated a Bill Regan team twice in a season. It seems improbable indeed, but one of the several rematches that are part of this year’s semifinals include a second EO-Knolls encounter in Robeson Stadium. After a stopover at one of the nearby eateries, the Swami will land on the sidelines for this titanic match-up. The fleet-footed and opportunistic Jaguars would seem to be at a disadvantage in facing the immortal Regan for a Round 2, but somehow, we see Marion Bell’s squad doing just enough to make this one a memorable night for the home crowd in Robeson. I can see a Quadir Pendleton to Akeem Cunningham completed pass down the sidelines right now. It will be enough. East Orange 27-21

North 2, Group 1: Verona at Cedar Grove (The Rivalry Game! Round 1)

The Coach: The Hillbillies rolled off 7-staright victories since their sole loss to Mountain Lakes. Things look good in Verona with 21 or more points in each of those wins. Unfortunately, all seven of those games were not against a defense as solid as that of the Panthers. How can you argue with the stunning victory over Hoboken and not expect a state final in the Grovers’ future … Cedar Grove 21-7

The Swami: This is the start of six days of the neighborhood arguments over who is the better football team where some Hillbillies’ backyards actually border Panther territory. Verona showed us a great deal with its ultra-impressive road win at Brearley in the playoff opener, and Coach Lou Racioppe and his staff have regrouped with gusto after an early-season lopsided loss to Lakes. Carlo Calabrese and company will try and will Verona to victory. (BTW, can it get any more exciting than this in public school football circles?) Carlo could have gone to Bergen or Bosco but stayed home to be part of a game like this. He’s a player, and his teammates combine to form a dangerous road team, but, this is Grove. The Panthers’ skill-position people are varied in their abilities and they’re more experienced as a group. Plus, the swarming defense that Ed Sadloch’s crew presents is perhaps even underrated. With all that being said, this could be a classic in the best sense of the word with the home team holding a slight edge. Cedar Grove 24-21

Saturday:
North 2, Group 3: West Side at Morristown

The Coach: The Roughriders snapped a two-game losing streak with their 26-6 victory over Union Hill. Morristown knocked off the defending champions, New Brunswick. Again, you all know how I feel about Morristown’s triple threat of Bass, Carter and Colvin. West Side has the power to match up with Morristown, score for score … but I think Mo-town’s stingy defense will be enough to get them to the final. Morristown 28-14

The Swami: I had the fortune to see Morristown in a tremendous football game earlier this season in the one game it has lost this year. What impressed me beyond the fact that the team is physical and persistent on defense is the fact it can potentially beat you with Michael Colvin’s passing to Jerry Carter, and it can blaze past you with the running of George Bass. West Side has done a splendid job, led by the dynamic quarterback Anthony Baskerville and backs Jonathan Quallis and Carlos Cox, but I don’t think the Roughriders are ready for the lock-down defense of the Colonials. Morristown 20-13

North 1, Group 2: River Dell at Lenape Valley

The Coach: The Super-Schwam really threw a wrench in The Coach’s tricycle here. The Golden Hawks have it all … an explosive offense and a defense that just does not give up points. The Jefferson Falcons learned that the hard way … and you know that give the Dell a ton more confidence going into this game against another SCIL team. Matt Connolly, Dan Chiarello and Blake Crouch can get the Hawks to the end zone quickly and often. Lenape Valley beat Jefferson 34-7 earlier in the year. Trevor Stempert and Mike Moschella have been key players for Lenape. Who will prevail, the Patriots’ rocket charged offense or River Dell’s airtight defense? I will always go with “DEFENSE” this time of year. The Lenape Valley following got a little free game time last week and may get more this week – you get a OT here too. River Dell 21-14 in OT!

The Swami: During his past life as one of the architects of the Glen Rock run-and-shoot offense, River Dell Head Coach D.J. Nimphius proved to be a dynamic coordinator. In his four years with the Golden Hawks his teams have kept taking a step up. My contacts in Bergen County indicate that now, they are ready to soar right toward Giants Stadium in two weeks. Lenape Valley survived in two overtimes against Mahwah. The SCIL did not have a terrific year outside of Kittatinny’s incredible campaign. The best of the BCSL gets the better of Sussex in this one. River Dell 28-14

North 2, Group 2: Chatham at Morris Hills (rematch)

The Coach: I heard that even John Garzone is going to be this game and that Coach Sabo has asked the 1989 MH Football alum to make the pregame speech - not only that ... Sabo has also called on Ralph Natoli to sing the national anthem in his home town of Rockaway Boro!! That rascal that vandalizes the NJO forum may be be leading the alumni section in the house that Verdun built! Let me tell you, they know how to treat Press there at MoHills. Preferred parking, plenty of booth space and Mr. Lusardi passing along rosters to all who walk near that great snack booth that is only second to one at West Essex! (thanks for the chicken sandwich!!) But I know you really care about the game. Chatham was close to knocking off Hills earlier this year, but the Scarlet Knights’ defense came up big near the goal. Chatham looked great against Caldwell and really played perfect ball while dominating the Chiefs. Chatham can pound the ball at you and reminds me of the old-school Bill Parcells’ NY Giants that controlled the ball and punched it in. Chatham has cut down on their red zone mistakes and this should come up big against a Morris Hills’ that was just flat out sloppy in the 1 st half against Bernards. I did love the air-Sabo attack of Morris Hills last week and that may be the difference in this game. If Hills gets a 2 TD lead at any point, consider this one over. Morris Hills will be going to the show for the 1 st time since 1989 – no way I can pick against my flesh and blood here! Morris Hills 28-14

The Swami: One of the most enjoyable times this scholastic sports pundit has had in the last decade was jumping on the bandwagon of Chatham in 2005 during a memorable playoff run that included classic-like road wins at Caldwell and Orange before running into a bigger and stronger team in Lodi in the North 2, Group 2 final at Giants Stadium. It’s tough to compare teams. Don Dayon’s latest edition is a ground-oriented machine in the making with an occasional breakaway Cam Wood kick or punt return thrown in. Morris Hills, on the other hand, has shown a resiliency in picking up the pieces after a lopsided loss to West Essex earlier this season to play impressive football over the past month. Justin Doniloski, a very important two-way player for the Scarlet Knights, is healthy again, and his presence at halfback and linebacker is huge. Plus, the Ken Kellner to Doug Dudek pass-catch combo is ever present. Chatham is on the rise, but the feeling is the home team is Meadowlands-bound. Morris Hills 21-13.

Non-Public, Group IV: St. Peter's Prep-Bergen Catholic

The Coach: The Swam is also at a big advantage here, as I really do not brush up on these teams and … well … he knows everything. So I am not going to tell you anything that you do not already know. Bergen Catholic’s only loss came to Don Bosco. St. Pete’s averages almost 50 points a game. The skill goes deep on both squads, but I watched St. Peter’s just reload as the heat set at Giants Stadium. I am sure that the Crusaders have the same loaded arsenal in the wings – Bergen Cath. Man-handled Red Bank Catholic. All I know is that this should be great football when you can build All-Star teams of this magnitude: Bergen Catholic: 35-28

The Swami: Give Fred Stengel and company credit. A lot of folks were bidding him adieu even before the season started after last year’s less than satisfactory campaign. But, B.C. has bounced way back this fall, behind a strong offensive line and a wealth of competent defenders. It is not an explosive team, nor is it as athletic as St. Peter’s Prep, which, of course, boasts the state’s No. 1 player in Florida-bound Will “The Thrill” Hill. The Thrill has taken over enough games in the past two years. He’s certainly capable of doing it one more time before having to face No. 1 Bosco. St. Peter’s Prep 31-24

SANTIAGO’S TRICK LEADS MORRIS HILLS 4-0

Rodrigo Santiago, Adam Katz, Tony Ramos and Mike Benvenuto wanted to make their last home game one they would never forget. As coach Kevin Rosenberg said,” Mission accomplished.” Santiago tallied three goals, Katz and Ramos both had assists and Benvenuto anchored the defense that registered a shutout, their 15th of the season, as Morris Hills rolled to a 4-0 win over Wayne Hills in North I Group III state tournament action.

The”Fab 4,” as their coach referred to them, are all four year letter winners for the Morris Hills soccer team. During that time Morris Hills has qualified for state tournament play four times, they have won a sectional championship and a Morris County Championship. Santiago’s first goal came at the 14:52 mark off an assist from Katz. Four minutes later the Knights were threatening again. Santiago appeared to put his team up 2-0 after hitting the back of the net off a throw-in by Ramos, but he was whistled for being offside’s on the play.

Seven minutes later it was Katz who almost put the Knights up 2-0 as his header off of Santiago’s free kick hit the crossbar. “We created several good opportunities and we knew we were playing well. There keeper did an outstanding job of denying us.” Said Rosenberg. “But eventually we were able to break through and get a few more.”

Santiago tallied his 2nd of the game, and 20th of the season, just before halftime. As he dribbled past a defender in the middle of the pitch he was tripped up resulting in a free kick about twenty yards from goal. Just like he did in the county final against Delbarton, Santiago left the keeper with no chance as he bent his shot around the five man wall and into the back of the net. Morris Hills then had another goal called back with less than a minute remaining in the first half. David Brand ran onto a through pass and cut it back to Santiago, who headed it into an open net, but the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the end line before Brand got to it.

Morris Hills put the game away eight minutes into the 2nd half. Tony Ramos settled the ball on the left side of the box and played a through ball to a streaking Santiago who buried the ball in the lower right corner to complete his hat trick. “ I was so proud of Tony on the play because just moments earlier he had missed a great opportunity to score himself,” said Rosenberg. “Instead of having a pity party he got his head back in it and assisted on his teammate’s goal. That is a great job by him.”

David Brand registered the final goal of the game on a wonderful individual effort. He collected a loose ball about forty yards from goal and dribbled down the right flank. He beat a defender off the dribble and then drilled a shot into the far post side netting from about eight yards out.
The only job left was to preserve the shutout for goalkeeper Rafael Diaz. As they had all game, the Morris Hills back line, lead by Benvenuto, continued to frustrate the Wayne Hills attackers. Wayne Hills registered just one shot on goal in the 2nd half that was easily handled by Diaz. “Our backs are the key to our success,” said Rosenberg. “When they play well, we are real tough to beat. Mike is the leader back there and he always does a great job.”

Morris Hills now moves on to play Ramapo, a 2-1 winner over Wayne Valley, in the section final. The game will be Friday afternoon at 2 pm in Ramapo.

Sideline Swami & The Coach Set To Tackle Playoffs With Gusto

The Coach’s recap: I guess I just need to admit to myself and everyone … the “Schwam” sees all and knows all. My Morris Knolls Golden Eagles held a 17-0 lead over state power East Orange … and The Coach was as shocked as most – except the Swami – when East Orange mounted a huge comeback and gave the Essex County Expert a two game lead with one month left.

The Swami’s take: First off, I must commend ‘The Coach’ for picking the exact score of last weekend's Chatham-West Essex game (21-0 Knights). At times, he’s right on the mark, but in other instances, such as in a couple of picks below, you’ll realize he can be overmatched, at least when it comes to matching wits with the sideline guru himself now that the ‘real’ season has arrived. It’s playoff time!!...So, without further adieu, let’s begin:

Friday:
Madison at West Essex (North 2, Group 2)
Coach: Yes, Madison suffered a tough “upset” last week at Orange forcing the Dodgers to fall to the 7 th seed and force a road trip to the West of all Essex. Morris County needs the Dodgers of Week #1 to show up, as they did against Delbarton, for a “MoCo Upset!” A key to a Dodger upset would be Madison’s use of their passing game. The Dodger will have to stay with a one TD lead and hope to have the ball last. But, one thing I have learned this year … do not pick against West Essex and their suffocating Defense … West Essex 21-7.

Swami: Unfortunately, for Chris Kubik’s Dodgers, this is not the same team we saw in September. Standout lineman Mike Hall is done for the season with a knee injury and star linebacker-wide receiver-placekicker Brian McLindon could be out with a bum shoulder. That aside, this is definitely a cauldron Kubik and company are entering. West Essex has allowed just three touchdowns all season, has posted six shutouts and has unmatched playoff pedigree. Coach Drozjock and his staff live for November and December football, when decisions at crunch time are so critical and the Knights generally come through every time. West Essex 20-7.

Saturday:
Delbarton at St. Joe's (Non-Public, Group 3)
Coach: I do not know how many people thought The Green Wave could make a run to the State Finals last year? It’ll be a tough task if the Wave plan on making a run again. The Joey’s beat Poly Prep 40-0 … Delbarton took down Poly 17-13. Common opponents can be helpful when making these picks. St. Joes: 28-14

Swami: Interesting brief reference by coach to last year. I was there when Delbarton shocked NP3 by crushing previously undefeated Pope John behind QB Jack McBride and WR Max Seligmann. New season, different faces in some cases, and St. Joe’s is just better balanced than Pope John was last year. These two teams have played some classic playoff football and Coach Brian Bowers will have the Wave plenty ready. Still, Tony Karcich and the Green Knights are very tough to beat in this spot. It could be a classic, but: St. Joe’s 28-24.

Belleville at Morris Knolls, (North 1, Group 4)
Coach: This is where the Super Swami has an advantage … the guy knows everything! I rarely travel east of the Passaic River. One thing I do know, stopping the Golden Eagles offense is not an easy task. You can stop the likes of Kellan Cardio and Dan Herr a few dozen times, but it only takes one perfect read, and … touchdown! No let down for the Eagles this week, who lead by two touchdowns in both losses this year. Morris Knolls 28-14

Swami: As we document in feature on our home page at sidelinechatter.com, Belleville has been one of the great stories of the 2007 high school football season. Just think, 24 months ago, the Bucs were on a 33-game losing streak. Today, they’re back in the playoffs for the first time in 23 years. And, as gutsy a bunch as they are, they’re entering another playoff-tested terrain here in Denville. Coach Bill Regan is a master at dealing with these types of totally unfamiliar foes. A consummate game plan orchestra leader, he’ll have the Golden Eagles set to do what they usually do in big games. Morris Knolls 31-18.

Cresskill at Mountain Lakes, (North 1, Group 1)
Coach: Jake Tripucka and Ryan Przyborowski must now lead the Herd into their new season. Mountain Lakes averaged a whooping 39 points a game while cutting through the Colonials Hills Conference like a hot knife through The Cougars’ only loss was to Hasbrouck Heights -- at Heights -- at the inauguration of their new field. The score: 14-11. The Cougars have exploded on offense, averaging 40.5 point in their final four games. This makes for an interesting match up between teams that dominated all season long. Cresskill 28-26.

Swami: I’m a little surprised that The Coach picks Cresskill, but it’s not illogical by any means. Bob Valli is another playoff tested coach and the Cougars will be a handful indeed for the Herd. Still, it’s hard to go against Doug Wilkins, his trusty defensive coordinator Charlie Roche and the rest of the Herd in a first-round home game. The last time Mountain Lakes opened the playoffs against a BCSL team was in 2005 when it was physically handled by Hasbrouck Heights. This is a better Herd squad with enough to get by here. It won’t be easy. Still, have to go with the 300-win sage and his guys. Mountain Lakes 21-14.

New Brunswick at Morristown, (North 2, Group 3)
Coach: Wow is this tough Section! Morristown not only survived the rough and tough IHC-Iron, claiming a hare of the crown. New Brunswick is 5-3, but that means nothing now … New Brunswick is the defending N2-G3 champions, as you already know. Their nickname is the Zebras … how do you think the refs feel about that? Their conference schedules have these two ready for this game, but this year, it’s the Colonial’s turn! Morristown 21-14

Swami: Another game I was fortunate to see last year was New Brunswick’s playoff semifinal win at Morristown. This is definitely a different Zebras’ team and a totally transformed Colonials’ squad. Yes, New Brunswick still has the wonderful quarterback Brandon Smith, and the expert coaching of John Quinn, but the team is not nearly as good, and Morristown has a much improved Michael Colvin at QB and the ever-elusive George Bass running or catching the football. Plus, Chris Hull’s team is hungry. You could see it even in its only loss so far this season in the opener at Seton Hall Prep. With a whole lot more at stake here, there will be no prisoners. Morristown 28-13.

Chatham at Caldwell, North 2, Group 2
Coach: Talk about two teams that have had opposite seasons … Chatham, making a huge surge to run table until falling to West Essex in the season finale. I really like Chatham’s pound-the-ball-at- you attitude that reminds me of the good ole’ days in the IHC … yes, there was a time when only Mt. Olive threw the ball and everyone else ran the wing-T. I even like the Cougars more knowing that Caldwell is on a three-game losing streak. You can bet the Cougars want revenge on Morris Hills and West Essex! It all starts here. Chatham 28-7

Swami: Although it was two years ago when these two teams last met at Bonnel Field, I remember it like it was yesterday. Chris Betz and Tim Lutke were leading a memorable Chatham team on a historic playoff run that started against Caldwell. It was a dandy of the game, won by the Cougars; however, 24 months later, these teams are, of course, entirely different, and although Chatham has shown considerable gusto in most of its games this fall and has a bevy of young, promising athletes, such as junior Campbell Wood. But, Coach Dayon and company are taking on another seasoned playoff program, one with an outstanding coaching staff and an equally bunch of gutsy kids, led by the elusive QB Derek Lawshe and one of the state’s top sophomores in fullback-linebacker Chris Eucker. This could be another classic like in 2005, but I just think the Chiefs will reclaim some of the magic that helped them win at Lakeland and DePaul earlier this season. Caldwell 24-21.

North I – Group 3 - A look at the teams

1. Wayne Hills (8-0; 9-0; 72)

The perennial Group III power has outscored opponents 359-41 in their nine victories. The Patriots have won sectional titles in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 with undefeated seasons in ’05, ’06 and thus far in ’07. Dan DeCicco is an offensive power as the Patriots look for their fourth in a row. The Patriots beat Indian Hills 64-20 last week.

2. Wayne Valley (8-0; 9-0; 71)

Conference champions in 2005 & 2006 in the Northern Hills - Skyline, Matt Dortch and Derrick Bligh can punish defenses. The Indians are averaging just about 40 points a game. A 30-3 victory over Caldwell ended the regular season for the Indians.

3. Paramus (6-2; 6-2; 69)

T.J. Chickanos is a formidable passer while Jonathan Rizzitello is a key back handling the ball carrying duties. The Spartans are on a 3-game winning streak, with a Thanksgiving game vs. Ridgewood in the wings.

4. NV-Old Tappan (7-1; 7-1; 59)

Seniors Kyle Jansen and Jaime Rowe are scoring threats for the Golden Knights. Coach Dunn’s team is 5-0 on the road this year. The Knights are coming off a 41-21 victory over Mahwah.

5. Mount Olive (4-4; 4-5; 39)

A lot has changed for the Marauders who started the season 4-0. Injures coupled with the tough Iron Hills Conference schedule has taken its toll. Mt. Olive enters the playoffs under .500 and on a 5 game losing streak.

6. Teaneck (4-4; 4-4; 37)

The Highwaymen were finding wins in every other week until they met up with Eastside and Montclair on back-to—back weeks. Facing a must win to get in to the playoffs, Teaneck took down Ridgewood 21-14. Rashad White is a key receiver for QB Damian Miles.

7. Passaic Valley (5-3; 36)

Senior Quarterback Jim Niland is smart, fast, agile and accurate. Mike Governali is a key target for Niland, as is Dominick Corio out of the backfield. Niland threw three second half touchdowns and ran for two as the Hornets scored 6 times to come from behind and defeat West Milford earlier in the year.

8. Parsippany Hills (5-3; 32)

Eugene Fowler is top back in Morris County and Dan DePugh. The Vikings defense is strong and they’ll need Greg DePugh to fill in for injured QB Joe Scialampo. Fowler ended the Vikings regular season with 150 yards on 25 carries and scored three TD’s in a 28-8 victory over Weequahic.

North II – Group 3 (after 8 games)

Morristown (7-1; 73)
West Side (7-1; 64)

North I – Group 3: A look at the teams

1. Irvington (8-0; 8-0; 89)

The Blue Knights are nothing short of impressive this year. After losing a heart breaker to New Brunswick last year, you can be sure the Knights have tunnel vision peering straight to Rutgers. Explosive, the Knights are averaging 33 points a game. They have already beaten Scotch Plains and West Side.

2. Morristown (7-1; 8-1; 73)

The Colonials are co-champs of the rough and tough IHC-Iron. Morristown can be explosive. A come from behind victory over Morris Knolls was a key victory this season. Their loss came to Seton Hall Prep on opening day when the Colonials went for two, but were stopped. Colvin, Cater and Bass are key to the Colonials offense.

3. West Side (7-1; 7-2; 64)

The Roughriders are now on a two game losing streak. Their latter of the two coming to Irvington, 30-8. West Side needs to break out of this two game losing streak with a victory over Union Hill in order to meet up with either Morristown or defending champion New Brunswick.

4. Scotch Plains (6-2; 6-2; 56)

The Raiders caught Union on the upside of the Farmer’s season. That was one of the two losses Scotch Plains has suffered. The other came at the hands of Irvington.

Michael Chervenyak and Anthony Taylor spark the offense for past Kinnelon Coach Jim DeSarno.

5. Colonia (6-2; 6-2; 55)

The Patriots last two victories have come in overtime, 10-7 over South Plainfield in 2 OT’s and 3-0 over Carteret. These may be the Cardiac Kids of 2007, The Pats also have a 20-19 victory over Monroe as well as a 28-26 loss last week to Sayreville on their record. Colonia is led by D1 recruit Eric LeGrand

6. Union Hill (7-1; 7-1; 50)

The Hillers only loss was to Hudson Catholic three weeks ago. Tommy Velasquez and Jorge Evora are key to the Hillers offensive attack. A 7-0 victory over Hoboken is the Hillers standout victory this season.

7. New Brunswick (5-3; 45)

Another name that haunt the Mendham faithful for a few years … a Zebras loss to JFK would have gotten the Minutemen in, but John Quinn’s crew refused to help us out up here in MoCo. First, the Zebras had to win to be in … and they did. New Brunswick is the defending N2-G3 champions, as you already know. Marquis Hamm’s interception for a touchdown gave NB a 19-6 lead, and proved to be the nail in the Minutemen’s coffin.

8. South Plainfield (5-3; 41)

The Tigers are now a mortal enemy of Mendham, who they should pass on a tie-breaker. A 24-22 victory over North Plainfield basically secured the state birth. A key win for the Tigers came over Monroe when the Tigers had trailed 22-0 during the course of the game. Troy Russell's kickoff return for a touchdown helped start the comeback. Little did we all know the impact.

Football North I & II -- Group 2

The Cougars are an offensive juggernaut, outscoring the SCIL 238-65. Kyle Hayes is an accurate and versatile passer while Richie Joseph and Ryan Carroll lead the rushing attack. The Cougars won the SCIL.

The Golden Hawks have it all … an explosive offense that has scored 301 points and a defense that has only yielded 21 points. Six of the nine victories were shut outs. Matt Connolly, Dan Chiarello and Blake Crouch can get the Hawks to the end zone quickly and often.

(or 2) Lenape Valley (7-1; 7-2; 55)

Before the cutoff, the Patriots’ only set back has come at the hands of Kittatinny. They lost to Pope John last week. In their seven victories, the perennial Group 2 contender has put up 216 points with 3 shutouts. Trevor Stempert and Mike Moschella can get the ball in end zone.

Lakeland (6-2; 7-2; 45)

The North Hills conference team has rolled off three staright victories after falling to Delbarton on Ocober 13^th. Greg Bardzell and Ray Capo get the ball moving via the ground game. Lou Montegari is a strong passer who connects with Danny Dieghan and Tyler Johnson, amongst others.

Pascack Valley (5-3; 5-3; 43)

The Bergen County School enters the playoff on a two game winning streak. Donald Wiezik is a solid QB for the Indians, who are 4-1 at home. This does not fair well for the Indians since the #5 seed almost guarantees that they played their last home game this year.

Jefferson (5-3; 6-3; 42)

The Falcons are lead by John Kaschak’s 11 touchdowns. Travis Smith has 5 of his own. Dom Macaluso has missed a few weeks due to injury, but sophomore Gavin McCarney has filled in just fine. Both QB’s split time this Saturday against Wallkill Valley. The Falcons defense stopped the Rangers twice as the Wallkill Valley was about to score. Both times, the Falcons intercepted passes in the end zone.

Mahwah (5-3; 5-3; 39)

Greg Stripe, Dylan Meola and Anthony Negron handle the rushing duties for the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds lost to Pascack Valley 28-14 three weeks ago and followed that up with a loss to Northern Valley-Old Tappan.

Tenafly (6-2; 6-2; 36)

The Tigers ended a two game losing streak by defeating their next two opponents by a combined score of 90-12. Brian Sherman is a solid senior running back who guides the Tiger’s offense.

The Question: Will Kittatinny’s rocket charged offense and River Dell’s air tight defense meet up in the finals? (Hopefully, Dell will get the 2-seed and let it be a possibility.)

North II – Group 2 (after 8 games)

West Essex (7-1; 55)
Hanover Park (5-3; 32)

North II – Group 2

Morris Hills (7-1; 8-1; 56)

The Scarlet Knights features a dangerous multifaceted attack lead by Dan Kellner, Colin Be, Justin Dolinowski, Derric Torres and Luke Mirabella. Now that Dolinoski back from a shoulder injury, the Scarlet Knights offense should overwhelm defenses, setting up the Knights-rematch with West Essex, who the lost to 28-7.

West Essex (7-1; 8-1; 55)

The Scarlet Knights boast one of the best defenses in North Jersey. Six of their eight wins are by shut out. They have not let up more than one touchdown in a game and 20 point over-all! Anthony Hayek – who is almost ready to return - is a dominate force on both offense and defense. The Scarlet Knights have a handful of talented and able backs ready to carry the ball including Andrew Cross, Mike Agrifolio and John Locascio.

Hanover Park (5-3; 5-4; 26)

The Hornets battled through a stint without standout Ryan Hinton. Phil Gatti, Alex Ardolino, Evan Picariello and Pete Nagy stepped it up when the Hornets needed it most. Hinton’s touchdown spurred

Hanover Park to a 7-6 upset victory over West Essex in Week 7. The Hornets have lost tough, tough games to Morris Hills, Chatham and Mendham – all of which were very close.

Chatham (5-3; 5-4; 30)

Another IHC team that has been in ever game until the end. The Cougars may have found their stride just at the right time. Cam Wood and Kyle McDoughna are as powerful as any back in the Hills Division. All three of the Cougars losses have been heart breakers. West Essex shut out the Cougars, but many wondered if the Cougars stayed vanilla knowing that the game had no effect on there post-season and conference.

Caldwell (4-4; 4-4; 30)

The Chiefs have dropped three straight entering the playoffs. One touchdown losses to Madison and Montville have haunted the Essex County School. Quarterback Derek Lawshe and RB Corey Patterson help aid the Chiefs offense.

Ridgefield Park (5-3; 6-3; 28)

A good record, but a lack of power points drops the Scarlets to #6. Craig McLean, Pete Kraljic and Hasham Sohail all contribute to the offense. The Scarlets rolled off four straight victories after opening with two losses. They enter the playoffs on a two game winning streak.

Madison (4-4; 4-4; 26)

The Dodgers almost knocked off Delbarton in week 3, but moral victories account for zero power points. An unexpected 14-7 loss to now 3-6 Orange really confused many who tried to figure out the seeding this section. Junior QB Sean Allen can pick apart defenses. A win against Pequannock in week 7 secured up a postseason seat for the Dodgers and 1^st year coach Chris Kubic.

Bernards (4-4; 4-5; 22)

The Mountaineers are actually heading into the states with a losing record. The new addition Skylands-Raritan League had to win three straight to qualify and did just that. Wins over North Warren, South Hunterdon and Somerville allowed the ex-Colonial Hills Conference team into the show.

The Question: Many though this was a cake walk section for West Essex, but This could be a very solid section. Madison was seconds away from upsetting Delbarton. Hanover Park has beat West Essex and was close with Morris Hills and Chatham was on a roll and has been in every game until last week … so who can beat West Essex?

1. Hasbrouck Heights (8-0; 8-0; 47)
The Aviators boast one of the best nicknames in the state and look to return to the state finals, but this time walk away victorious. The rocket-fueled offense has really turned it up in this season scoring almost 31 points a game. Their key victory came with a 14-12 victory over Bogota. Senior tailback Andrew Nass and Junior quarterback Bobby Kistner spark the offensive power.

2. Hawthorne (8-0; 9-0; 47)
Undefeated and tied with Heights, it looks like the Bears will be the #2 seed, according to NJGridiron.com. The Bears are loading up the points, averaging almost 31 ppg. Defensively, the Passaic County school as recorded four shut outs, three in a row before yielding at TD in their finale. Middle linebacker Steve Hein is force in leading the solid defense. Quarterback Jim Zenock calls the shots for the potent offense.

3. Westwood (7-1; 7-2; 46)
The Cardinals averaged 31 points a game in their 6 victories. Westwood then shut out Queen of Peace out of North Arlington before losing to undefeated River Dell in their regular season finale. The offense is lead by the explosive James Taylor. Alex Macchio can fluster quarterbacks in the defensive backfield.

4. Mountain Lakes (8-0; 9-0; 43)
The Herd may have replaced 18 seniors from last year’s state finalist, but there’s no doubt that Jake Tripucka and Ryan Przyborowski can get Mountain Lakes back to Giant’s Stadium. The Herd averaged a whooping 39 points a game while cutting through the Colonials Hills Conference like a hot knife through butter. No one, even perennial Group 1 power Verona, has challenged the impressive small Morris County School and they must be prepared for a completive game. Coach Wilkens, a recent new member of the 300 win club, has been here many times and will have this squad ready.

5. Cresskill (7-1; 7-1; 33)
Kyle Elliott is an efficient passer for the Cougars. Cresskill's only loss was to Hasbrouck Heights-- at Heights -- at the inauguration of their new field. The score: 14-11. The Cougars have exploded on offense, averaging 40.5 point in their final four games. They are scheduled to play New Milford on Thanksgiving.

6. New Milford (6-2; 6-2; 32)
Another team that has fell to Wood-Ridge, the greatly improved Knights are well ahead of last season’s 5-5 campaign. New Milford is lead by Rob Hackett and Will Walsh. AJ Scoppa is a force out of the backfield.

7. Glen Rock (5-3; 5-3; 28)
Chuck Stewart has a knack for finding the end zone and is a versatile offensive threat. The Panthers rally took one in the chin against Paterson Catholic this week and will have to have to recovery quickly if they hope to contain high powered Hawthorne. The Panther defense was not able to stop The Bears on September 15, as Glen Rock fell 42-36 to Hawthorne – remember the Bears have 4 shut outs. The good new is that they did put up 36 points on the #2-seed.

8. Pompton Lakes (4-4; 5-4; 24)
Scott Mahoney and the Cardinals are in at #8. Pompton Lakes only averages 16 points a game and will need a stellar effort from their defense if they are going to stop the Aviators offensive barrage. The Cardinals lost to Hawthorne 12-0 and the only team to hold the Bears to under 26 points!

Potentially best game for the football fan:
(1st) Mountain Lakes at Hasbrouck Heights – great Defense vs. great Offense
(2nd) That winner vs. Hawthorne.

Note switch that order if the 1 & 2 seeds are flopped.

1. Belvidere (7-1; 7-1; 49)
The County Seaters are tallying up the points, averaging over 38 points a game in their 7 victories. Their only loss came at North Plainfield. Mike Mottola is threat to score on the ground as well as bring a recipient of Ian Schreffler’s aerial attack.

2 or 3. Cedar Grove (8-0; 8-0; 44)
The Panthers were knocked out last year by Mtn. Lakes and are hungry to win a title. Cedar Grove lost to Ramsey last year, its only loss in ’06, and evenged that defeat this season with a 7-0 victory. Coming in off three straight shutouts, look for the Grove to battle through this tough section. Sean Smith and Mike Risimini are a great one-two punch out of the backfield. Steve Adams adds another threat to the powerful Panther offense. Drew Evangelista is a steady and experienced place kicker and can be game breaker in the playoffs.

2 or 3. David Brearley (7-1; 7-1; 44)
Earlier this season the Kenilworth-based school, knocked off Rahway, the only team to defeat New Providence, yet New Providence is the only team to knock of Brearley . The Pioneers are also the only team to score more than 7 against the Bears stingy defense that has FIVE shut outs to their credit. Steve Margolin is a big offense threat.

4. New Providence (7-1; 7-1 43)
The Pioneers have rolled off six straight victories since falling to Rahway in Week #2. The perennial Group I contender may looks eager to get back to finals. The last two weeks of October saw NP shut out both Dayton and Hillside. The Pioneers play Governor Livingston on Thanksgiving.

5. Secaucus (7-1; 7-1; 40)
Lucas Litwin, Todd Tartaglia and Bob Roesing can get to the end zone for the Patriots. Coach Charlie Voorhee’s crew has won all seven games since their opening loss to Ramsey – the last a 34-0 victory over Harrison.

6 or 7. Verona (7-1; 7-1; 37 or 38)
The Hillbillies are focused and ready to get back the state finals. Carlo Calabrese is one of the finest linebackers in the state and frustrates defenses offensively. He is without a doubt a key D-1A prospect. The Hillbillies needed to add the Academy of the New Church from Bryn Athyn, PA to grad an 8th game. They suffered a 34-6 defeat at the hands of Mountain Lakes, but have rolled ever since. They will meet Cedar Grove on Thanksgiving.

6 or 7. Hoboken (6-2; 6-2; 37)
While outscoring opponents 302-49 (6-14 in their two losses), the Redwings are the team you want to avoid until the finals. Collin Edwards, Desmond Bates, Jason Montalvo and Cadeam Stevenson allow the Redwings to pound the ball right their opponents. Hoboken has only played two home games all year and the Red Wings look to get back to the finals while on the road.

8. Becton (6-2; 6-2; 32)
The Wildcats had to roll off six straight wins to get to the post season … and they did. Becton averaged almost 41 points in their last 4 victories. They will need to continue that offense prowess if they hope to knock off the County Seaters.

Notes: Cedar Grove & Brearley are tied at 44, but according to http://www.gridironnewjersey.com/ the Panthers should win the tie-breaker; http://www.sidelinechatter/ has the Bears at 2, thus matching up Cedar Grove and Verona two weeks in a row. Either way, here's one time you are you hopingto LOSE THE TIE-BREAKER! That is, unless you want to beat the scarest team in the bracket off the bat.

Vikings & Przybylo hold back Tigers

The host Vikings may have been anxious and a bit too rev’ed up to open today’s state game. Despite jumping out to 1-0 lead in the 20^th minute, both sides knew that one goal would not be enough.

Morris County Scoring leader David Przybylo gave the #3-seeded Vikings a 1-0 lead on a nice feed from Paul Trisuzzi. Przybylo and the visiting keeper met just near the top of the circle. The acrobatic Viking, booted the ball up and over the shot blocker and could only raise his hands in celebration as the ball crossed the unattended goal. The 1-0 may have gotten the Vikings a bit too wound up. A minor break down with only a minute left until halftime allowed South Plainfield to tie it up at one. Brendan O’Shea scored as the result of a chaotic flurry in front of the net and connected from point blank range.

But the Viking regained their composure and immediately went back to work in the second half. “We had a lot of anxiety for this game. We were too excited coming in and needed to regain our composure,” said Par Hills’ Head Coach Ahmed Kandil after the game. “I asked them to refocus, start taking more shots and step up the pressure. I asked them to play with more pride and step it up another notch.”

With a touch of strangling defensive play and a few timely goals, Parsippany Hills advances to the next round of the states in North 2, Group 3. South Plainfield had previously knocked out Morris County’s own West Morris Central in the state tournament.

Przybylo connected again just six minutes into the second half. The senior captain was eluded the visiting keeper just above the goal box and knock it in for a 2-1 lead. The play was set up on a great advancing pass from senior, defenseman Brian Eswood.

Parsippany Hills added another goal in the 62nd minute. The insurance goal was created when Freddy Castano picked the ball from a South Plainfield defender looking to clear the ball out of the visiting box. Castano moved to the outside and fed Josimar Baldovino with a perfect touch pass. Baldovino set the ball with his right foot and pounded it deep into the far low corner, beating the sprawled out keeper.

Parsippany Hills would control most of the 2^nd half and outshot South Plainfield 10 to 6. Senior keeper Eric Gazdalski made five saves for the Vikings who advance to play the Essex County Champ, Milburn on Tuesday. The Miller beat Morristown 2-1 today in Millburn.

#9 Bloomfield Tech at #8 Hoboken, winner at #1 High Tech: High Tech is currently ranked #7 in Hudson County and at 11-3-1. Anything can happen when Hoboken mixes it up with the Tech Schools and the rest of Hudson County.

#5 Harrison at #4 Ridgefield: Harrison, a traditional Group 1 contender comes in at 13-5-2 while Ridgefield has put up 14 goals in their past 3 games. Look for this one to go into kicks with Ridgefield advancing.

#6 Whippany Park at #3 Market St. Tech: Tom Wilson and his Wildcats are always force and now that they return to Group I from a year up at Group 2, Whippany Park is another favorite to win this section. The Wildcats were knocked out of the MCT on a late penalty kick and must convert early to avoid late game heroics by the opposition.

#10 North Arlington at #2 Jonathan Dayton: NA had to beat Secaucus 1-0 to earn a shot at Jonathan Dayton. Dayton was on a serious roll in October and worked to 15-1 before dropping two games – a 3-0 loss to Cranford and a 2-1 at New Providence.

North 2, Group II
#9 Parsippany at #1 Cliffside Park: The Red Hawks handled Madison 3-0 to advance to this game. Parsippany can score and if they are playing well, they can really make some noise in this section. But Cliffside Park is a top Bergen team at 17-1; their only loss coming to Tenefly, a team that had beaten 2-1 earlier in the season.

#5 Lodi at #4 Bernards: The Mountaineers are 12-4-1 and enjoying playing in their new conference. The traditionally strong boys soccer program has been a team to reckon with while moving between Central and North Jersey Sections.

#6 West Essex at #3 Hackettstown: West Essex has a few great wins under their belt including an early season victory over Morris Hills. The Scarlet Knights hit a downwards slide, but have an opportunity to make good in the states. The Tigers, on the other hand, are enjoying another great season closing out October at 14-3-1 spurred by a 3-1 victory over Del Val. Matt Winkler scored two in that game.

#7 Lenape Valley at #2 Chatham: The Patriots wasted no time jumping out to a 4-1 halftime lead over Mountain Lakes in the 1st round of the states. Lenape Valley won that game 7-1 and now meets up with Chatham. The Cougars have only two losses, an upset loss to Morristown in the MCT and are now 16-2, as well as Hills Division Champions.

North 2, Group III

#8 Mendham at #1 Cranford: The Minutemen knocked off traditionally strong Scotch Plains 3-1 earlier this week. The Minutemen are capable of scoring at will, such as their 5-0 victory over Par Hills last week and 4-0 victory over West Essex. But can also struggle to find the back of the net as in their 3-1 loss to Parsippany. Mendham is a strong defensive team and is used to playing in tough games. Mendham can be dangerous, as Scotch Plains found out. Cranford has two shutout wins last week but suffered a 4-3 defeat to Scotch Plains a week before that. This one has the makings of a classic!

#12 Holmdel at #4 Nutley: Holmdel defeated Ferris 1-0 to advance to this match-up with Nutley. The Raiders passed JFK-Islin 5-0. Nutley is the real deal and really Don Bosco before falling 2-1.

South Plainfield at #3 Parsippany Hills: South Plainfield has already defeated one Morris County team, West Morris 2-1. Par Hills boasts Morris County’s leading scorer David Przybylo. South Plainfield had a winning October and come into this match up at 11-7-2. Kenny Breslau scored both goals in the in over Central.

#7 Morristown at #2 Millburn: The Colonials are another top team out of a soccer strong Morris County. Morristown held a 1-0 lead over Morris Hills before falling in the first few seconds of overtime. A 1-0 win over Emerson of Union City preceded a 1-0 loss to Livingston yesterday. Millburn is the Essex County Champions beating Montcair in the semi’s 4-1 and Columbia in the finals, 3-1. The victory moved Millburn to #4 in The Star Ledger Poll.

North 2, Group IV

#8 Edison at #1 Columbia: Edison had to beat Bayonne to get this round and did by virtue of a 2-0 shutout victory. Anest Roberts and Wes Ostrzycki scored to lead Edison. Columbia is the real deal. They play in the stacked IHC-Iron and knocked off Seton Hall Prep before falling to Millburn in the finals. This year has been no easy road for Columbia and this section will not be either.

#5 Union at #4 North Hunterdon: The Farmer beat Watchung Hills (state game) and lost to Elizabeth last week. Before that, Union had tied Elizabeth 1-1 and knocked off Union County’s #1 Westfield. North Hunterdon has also beat Watchung Hills in the past week. They come in at 15-3 and this should be another great match-up in the state tournament.

#6 Dickinson at #3 Bridgewater-Raritan: Dickenson of Hudson County is currently 14-5-1 and coming off a 2-1 victory over Piscataway allowing them to advance to this game. B-R suffered a tough loss, 3-2, to Pingry in the Somerset County Tournament. They come in with a record of 16-4.

#7 Elizabeth at #2 Westfield : Elizabeth has had a busy week, starting with a 4-0 victory over Roselle Catholic, followed up the nest day with a 1-0 state win over Ridge. Matias Cei stopped 10 shots for the shutout and Roberto Morneo-Duque was the goal scoring hero of the game. Westfield is ranked #1 in Union County and was the #1 seed for the UCT, but fell in the UCT to Scotch Plains, 1-0. Westfield won the Watchung Conference.

Non-Public North A

#9 Union Catholic at #8 Paramus Catholic, winner at #1 Don Bosco: Bosco’s in The Star Ledger’s NJ #1 and are now undefeated at 20-0. Don Bosco is one of four schools here that can take it all.

#5 Morris Catholic at #4 Seton Hall Prep: This is a very tough draw for the Crusaders as Seton Hall Prep has only lost to Columbia in the ECT, a team that had already neaten in the regular season. Morris Catholic lost to Delbarton in the Semi’s of the MCT.

#6 Pope John at #3 Pingry: Pingry is one team who has serious shot of knocking off Delbarton and then Seton Hall Prep or Bosco.

#10 DePaul at #7 Bergen Catholic, winner at #2 Delbarton: The Green Wave are the MCT runner’s up and were ranked #1 in NJ and top 5 Nationally before falling to Morris Hills. The Green Wave are many’s favorite to win North A and Non-Public.

Non-Public North B #5 Morristown-Beard at #1 Gill-St. Bernard's: Morristown-Beard did not enter the Morris County Tournament. They improved to 8-7 after beating Science 3-0. But fell to 8-8 after a 4-0 defeat at #1 seeded Gill-St. Bernard. A win vs. Eastern Christian gives the Crimson a chance to match up with the #1 seed again.

#3 Newark Academy at #2 Oratory Prep: These are the other two of the five teams that qualified for the NJSIAA state tournament.

Cougars Battle Back to Keep Season Alive

Cougars, Cosgrove rally to defeat Bernards, advance in states.

Chatham, NJ - There are some games that define a high school career. Some games are embedded as a lasting memory that you’ll always seem talk about. Some become an instant classic, a game that goes down in school history. For Charlotte Cosgrove and the Chatham Cougars, Thursday’s state game may have been all of the above.

The Chatham Cougars bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to score three second-half goals and stun visiting Bernards 3-2.

At halftime Thursday afternoon, the host Cougars faced a 2-0 deficit and a final 40 minutes leading to the conclusion of their season. The thoughts of packing up the lockers, turning in the uniforms and going home immediately after school were all shoved aside by an astonishing three-goal 2^nd half.

True, it looked shaky at the start. Bernards was in complete control during the first half. There was a study wind moving toward the scoreboard goal at Haas Field, but it was only slightly noticeable in the 1^st half. Despite all five goals being scored on the same half of the field, it was a rocket against the wind that decided the game.

Bernards broke open the 0-0 stalemate and jumped to a 2-0 lead just halfway through opening frame. Bernards was off to a promising start when Dana Perotti connected for the Mountaineers with only 10 minutes remaining until halftime. The determined squad from Somerset County kept the ball rolling and connected less than 2 minutes later as Lindey Smooth found the back of the net. It may have been safe to say that Bernards was well on their way to their second victory of the season over Chatham. Bernards had beaten Chatham, 2-1 on September 24.

The huge second half surge was sparked by Charlotte Cosgrove. Chatham came out strong in the second half, utilized the increasing wind and stormed back. Paige Farmakis fed Cosgrove from just outsize the box. A wide-open Cosgrove easily picked the top left corner to cut the lad in half with 33:20 left in the 2^nd.

Bernards took the ensuing start and walk down field launching a shot just over the outstretched arms of keeper Julia Cremonni continuing to sail over the cross bar. The Cougars definitely controlled play from here on out, but Bernards was still packed in, and playing well defensively.

But Chatham continued to apply pressure and tied the game at two with 11:43 left to play in the second. Biz Shenk flat out robbed a Mounteer midfielder and and spotted Cosgrive working back up the field. A composed Shenk, who is now back from a injury and was sorely missed, fed Cosgrove, who slid up the field. Cosgrove, despite being closely guarded, ripped the ball to the top right corner from nearly the same spot as the first goal. This shot came from outside the box and hooked nicely over the sprawled out Mountaineers keeper. Credit Shenk, who is headed to Holy Cross next fall, with the assist as well as seeing an opportunity for the play to develop.

Neither team looked eager to move into overtime and the offense attacks commenced. Cremonni came up big for the Cougars a few times in the final 10 minutes, but two saves really stand out. The first came off a ball headed twice towards the goal, where Cremonni was perfectly positioned making the save look easy. The second came as Mountaineer attacker passed the ball past a Cougar defender and Cremonni herself, but the swift senior pivoted back towards the net, sprinted and dove to trap the ball securely against her torso.

The decisive goal came with only 3:55 left in second. Junior Charlotte Cosgrove took a corner just to the right of the scoreboard. The kick, moving toward the goal against the wind, propelled with such force and spin that as his hooked back towards the goalie with such a backspin that it rickashayed off the keeper and into the net, giving Cosgrove the natural hat-trick. This was Cosgrove’s second hat-trick of the year, the first coming last week against Parsippany. The final goal of the game sent the Cougar bench into a frenzy, but the celebration had to wait. Bernard still attacked and the Cougar defense was still strong, denying centering passes, clearing balls and marking up.

Head Coach Tony Mendes remarked that this was “a nice win for girls, they really played the second half with heart.” Mendes said his halftime speech was short and to the point as he credited the players for leaving it all on the field. His advice - “just go to the ball and play with heart.”

Annie Weichert and Lauren Cremonni split the goaltending duties for the Cougars – combing for 9 saves in the victory. The goaltending tandem was challenged often by the relentless Mountaineers. Chatham advances to the North II - Group II semifinals against #1 seeded Summit. Chatham, now 14-5, has beaten Summit twice this season. Bernards fell to 12-8.

Boys Soccer - North 1 Preview

NJSIAA BOYS SOCCER -- North 1, Group I

#8 Butler at #1 Wallington: Butler beat #9 New Milford 1-0 on a goal by Brendan Pontidis. Butler comes in with a 10-8 record. Wallington is coming off a tie with Harrington, 1-1. Paul Kasica can find the net for the Panthers. Wallington, at 13-1-3 maybe many favorite to win Group 1 overall.

#5 Waldwick at #4 Pompton Lakes: Waldwick dad a nice 1-0 win over Saddle Brook last week. Waldwick beat Pompton Lakes 2-1 on October 9th, so this should be a good one!

#6 Emerson at #3 Cresskill: Matt Bancroft and Ian Oates scored as Cresskill knocked off Emerson 2-0 in late September. David Lubinski was solid in net with 12 saves. But, on October 15th, these two Bergen schools ties 1-1. Lubinski recorded 8 saves and it was Zak Azmi who stepped it up for the Cavos making 12 saves.

#7 Midland Park at #2 Becton: Park has beat Pompton Lakes 2-1 last week, avenging an earlier 1-0 defeat. Becton beat Harrison 2-1.

North 1, Group II

#9 North Warren at #1 Ramsey: North Warren defeated #8 Dwight Morrow 3-2 allowing the Patriots to advance. Traveling to Ramsey is no easy task. The Rams tied Wayne Hills 2-2 last week at home.

#5 Glen Rock at #4 Newton: Glen Rock took down Elmwood Park 2-0 while Newton defeated Westwood 3-0. The shutout victories allowed these two to meet up Friday. Kevin Churchill scored two for the Brave and Kyle Reinhardt added one. Matthew Beverin scored both for Glen Rock.

#11 Kittatinny at #3 Kinnelon: Manchester knocked off Dumont on the road, while the Colts put up six on Manchester, winning 6-1. Casey Stabile & Paul Montella scored the goals that enabled the Cougars to advance. Kinnelon is a very strong team, and Eric Makinen in net makes it difficult to score.

#7 River Dell at #1 Tenafly: The Dell beat Pascack Valley 2-1 setting up this match-up. This is a rematch of last Saturday’s game won by the Tigers, 2-1 in the second overtime. Ben Pearl & Scott Wiggins each came through with 6 saves for their respective teams.

North 1, Group III
#9 Wayne Hills at #1 Sparta – Wayne Hills beat Roxbury 1-0 this week to advance to this game. (see photos) Sparta is solid. They suffered a tough loss earlier in the season to Morris Catholic. The Spartans are a perennial SCIL power and are here to makes some noise, as always.

#5 Northern Highlands at #4 Morris Hills: NH defeated NV-Demarest to earn this match-up with the Scarlet Knights. Morris Hills is the newly crowned Morris County Champions and feature arguably the best keeper in the state. Coach Rosenberg was quoted saying, “Delbarton really had a more great scoring opportunities, but (Rafael Diaz) is so quick that he made the saves look routine.” Northern Highlands is a solid squad and can upset the Knights. The Allendale school rolled off five straight after trailing 1-0 to NV-D.

#6 Paramus at #3 Wayne Valley: Paramus passed #11 Passaic Valley 2-1 and now must square up with Wayne Valley. The Spartans, now 16-6, will have to play their best to upset Valley (ranked #10 by The Star Ledger). Wayne Valley is 14-1-1 with their only loss to NJ’s #4 Millburn.

#7 Montville at #2 Ramapo: The Mustangs took it to #10 West Milford en route to a 5-1 victory that allowed Montville to opportunity to play Ramapo. Ramapo is currently ranked #9 in the state and is a perennial power in Group 3. They will Josh Lewis early and often.
