Swimming Notes:

How about Morristown High School Boys’ Jeff Gomez broke the record in the 100 backstroke record (which stood since the late 80’s) and the boys 400 free medley team of Jeff Gomez, Tyler Poling, John Sittmann and Mark Albright shattered the 9 year existing record by close to 3 seconds? Look for some good things from this Mo-town team. The Colonials lost their first meet to Livingston 49- 45. First place finishers included:

50 freestyle: 1. Mark Albright (M) 24.36; 100 freestyle: 1. Jeff Gomez (M); 100 backstroke: 1. Poling (M) 1:01.69; 100 breaststroke: 1. Eric Villhauer (M) 1:11.88

Morristown Girls opened with a win over Livingston 64-30.

The boys later in the month of December up’d their record to 2-2 with a 91 – 79 victory over Summit:

Ice Hockey: Mountain Lakes surprises: The first one is always the toughest!

The Lakes won their first Mennen Division game and first of the 2006 season as Zach Cohen and James Putney found the net. Lakers standout keeper Matt Lowell turned away 25 shots in the shutout against Morris Knolls, 2-0.

Boys’ Hoops: Morris Catholic feeling at home in the Colonial Hills.

The Boys Basketball team is off to a quick 3-0 start. The Crusaders are a Morris County Top 10 and have scores 64 points over Montclair-Immaculate and 57 over Pingry in their first two wins. In a game where defense was the name of the game, the Crusaders were held to 24, 8 in the first half, but managed to hold the Ridgers to only 22. As all coaches know, its not how many you score, or how many they score, but who scores more when the final buzzer sounds.

Boys’ Hoops: Morris Hills takes first loss.

The Scarlet Knights have been lighting up the scoreboard, but ran into a Par Hills team that used a string second quarter to hand the Scarlet Knights their first loss. Parsippany Hills 73 (2-1) - Morris Hills 52 (2-1).

Girls’ Hoops: Hanover Park Girls opened to 3-0.

Hanover Park beat the Chatham Cougars 52 – 44. The Cougars fell to 1-2 and are definitely on of the two best 1-2 teams in Morris County. Morristown handed Roxbury their second loss. Both squads are top ten materials and you can count on plenty of wins from the Lady Gaels and the Cougars. The Hornets had four players contribute with 10+ points and have 5 or 6 young ladies that can tally up the baskets. Don’t think for one second that this conference is anywhere near settled. Mendham beat Chatham convincingly last week. West Essex then beats Mendham last night.

Girls’ Hoops: Lady Colonials refuse to lose: Morristown 36 (2-1), Roxbury 31 (1-2)

Three sport & All around standout Alycia Ryan dropped in 10 points. Teammate Erin Phillips also added 10 for Morristown. Again, Roxbury is not a sub 500 team and look for this squad to win a hand full of games as the season moves on.

Good friend, mentor and great guy Tom Wilson won his 400th basketball victory Thursday in Newark. Tom is all about the kids and loves coaching. This is a well deserved honor and mile stone, but Wilson just wants to his team to keep playing well. Wilson will glad tell you stories about any of the 400 wins, and a handful of the losses too, but he’s more focused on the kids improving. Wilson proves a great coach year after year. You’ll see his teams emphasize the players’ strength and design new plays daily. You’ll hear the girls joke that they have 100 in bounds plays. In return, his players believe in what he teaches, execute to his designs and produce winning seasons year after year. Wilson has only coached 2 sub 500 season in his 25 years coaching Girls Hoops at Whippany Park. The 55-51 victory over Arts was #400, as the Wildcats up’d their record to 2-1

Track is back! The Lid Lifter, appropriately named after one of the most dedicated coaches in the history of Track and Field: Jack O’Leary was simply a great coach. I was lucky enough to run for this legend at Morris Hills in 1990 and privileged enough to run with his sons. This great men treated every runner like his own son and was all about the kids. I was very happy when the track community honored this man with this honor.

Hanover Park's Mike Cuppari set a new meet record in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.75. The old mark of 7.83 was set by Hanover Park's Ken Fung in 1996.
