Wrestling appeal (see example in it)

being passed on:

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO TEAM INS YOUR DISTRICT

New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association

1161 Route 130 North, PO Box 487 Robbinsville, New Jersey 08691

To: Team Physicians

From: New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association

Date: December 7, 2006

Please review the NJSIAA wrestling minimum weight procedure.

The lowest weight class at which a wrestler may compete shall be determined as follows:

1) If the Minimum Wrestling Weight (MWW) as calculated by the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) program, at 7% (boys) or 12% (girls) fat is exactly that of one of the weight classes that shall be the wrestler’s minimum weight class.

2) If the MWW as calculated by the OPC, at 7% (boys) or 12% (girls) body fat falls between two weight classes, he/she must wrestle at the higher weight class.

3) If a wrestler’s body fat is lower than 7% (boys) or 12% (girls) that weight shall be his/her minimum. No other options.

4) With documented parental and physician permission, a wrestler may appeal the MWW and wrestle at the weight class in which his 7%/her 12% predicted weight, less 3% of that weight (not 3% body fat), places him/her. (For example, the result of district site assessment determines that a male wrestler is above 7% body fat and his minimum wrestling weight (MWW) is determined to be 127 lbs. The school physician and parent may apply the 3% (MWW) variance to approve the wrestler to compete at the 125 lb weight class. Three percent of 127 lbs is 3.81 lbs so the wrestlers adjusted (MWW) would be 123.19 lbs.)

5) For a wrestler to use the 3% physician appeal the following form must be completed below and signed by the parent and team physician.

Please refer to the wrestler’s original assessment form when completing the information below:

Wrestler Name __________________________ Wrestler’s School _______________________

Alpha Weight (Weight on date of initial assessment) _____

Alpha Body Fat % (Body Fat recorded on date of initial assessment) ______

Minimum Wrestling Weight (Calculated by OPC on the initial assessment form) ______

Calculate the new MWW with 3% variance: (Original MWW-(MWW.03) = ________

The aforementioned wrestler has my permission to lower his predicted 7% body fat weight by a maximum of 3%.

Parent’s signature _________________________________ Date__________

Physician’s signature _______________________________ Date__________

Once this form is complete and signed by both parties the information should be provided to the school assessor (ATC). The school assessor should enter this assessment data into the appeal section of the NWCA OPC program. The OPC is programmed to recognize the 3% MWW variance. The assessor MUST follow the complete instructions on how to enter the appeal information. The school assessor should obtain the OPC access codes from the Athletic Director. If the Athletic Director does not have the access codes, please contact the Jewel Sellers (609) 259 – 2776 at NJSIAA.

See you Friday!

Coach Carchietta will be MIA until Friday. I have not decided where I will be Friday night. I would love to be at Chatham/Randolph at 5:45 at Mennen, but it is also opening night of basketball. We’ll leave it up to a last minute choice. You can check bak in Friday morning, I'll be off until then.

Saturday, I will be at the HP tourn all day. You will get live updates after each round.

I received a handful of emails and phone calls about the weight certification process. I also spoke with a few past and present college wrestlers, some AD’s and few other “secret” people. Here’s my take on it.

I like the idea of weight certification. It is a very complex issue and one that will be exploited. Some High School Coaches and Athletes, unethically, will use any advantage to help themselves and their best interest, even if it is a violation. This is a shame and leaves a deep pain in my stomach.

First off, the process: After much research and inquiry, and much to my disbelief; the system can be bent or cheated. Some people may be in favor in stricter testing, some may say it’s a waste of time, but the idea is correct. I strongly feel that a wrestler with 9% body fat weighing 120 and 5’-4” is a different body type than the kid who is 6-1, 190 with 9% fat. Although the formula has been scientifically developed, the body type of this generic situation allows for the shorter/lighter kid to loose more weight in a healthy manner. Yet, they are held to the same 1.5% a week. - Basically 2 pounds a week. Is this wrong? It’s a very fine line.

Secondly, the Schools/NJSIAA need to invest in cups that have the temperature line. Any altered urine will be easily spotted.

Third, Coaches should not be allowed to hold their kids off. Not letting your kid try on the set date should result in a violation. Rules are being bent, and although unethical, not illegal.

Retakes & Appeals: So you failed, you know have an advantage – retake 2 days later. You can now, for the small fee of $5, have 2 extra days to hydrate and lose more weight.

How about this? Where does it say you can only be tested once? You test at 8:30 a.m.; you do not get the weight/body fat you want. Why can’t you weigh in later that day? I have only found information on appealing (which, basically you cannot).

Next year – I strongly suggest that they combine districts, bring in NJSIAA officials and test the groups together.

The input: The system was tough. It did not flow as any entry sheet – It took about 1 minute per kid. And remember that I am an expert with the number pad. Then, checking to make sure that the weights were ok, took a lot of time too.

I hope kids did not get cheated. I really do. But as one genius Superintendent from my past once said: “Life isn’t fair.” He said this in response to an ice hockey player actually lying about a on ice incident (all caught on film) and an A.D. (who still works in the field – just not in Morris County) not punishing the kid who fought. It was all on film – just so you know!

Hydration Test & Weight Certification

I am glad that Randolph and Morris Knolls did not score in the final 8 minutes of the game. I did not feel that bad for leaving early. Just so everyone knows, I arrived at the restaurant just as the calamari was being passed around, so I did not miss much.

Yesterday was a great experience. My services were rendered to District 9 yesterday. These schools had their wrestlers hydration test, weigh-in and have their weight certification. The schools in District 9 are Boonton, Delbarton, Hanover Park, Madison, Mountain Lakes, Morristown, Parsippany, Parsippany Hills and Whippany Park.

Just so you know. The NJSIAA has hired the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) to set forth the rules and guidelines for proper weight certification. The NWCA has worked since the early 1990’s to develop a professionally established weight plan to keep wrestlers on the same program. Many states have adopted this process as well as the NCAA. Basically, it is a play that does not permit (or feasibly allow) a wrestler to drop below 7% body fat. Simply put, the wrestler must first be hydrated. The height and age are entered into a calibrated scale. There is a 1.0 pound allowance for clothing – this was pre-entered and the scale was at –1.0 before the wrestler stepped on. This very expensive and high tech scale measures the wrestlers weight and uses an electronic current to measure the percent of body fat of the wrestler.

The following is copied directly from the NFHS website and will help you more understand the process:

… the NWCA has worked closely with the medical advisory committees of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to develop and deliver a "turn key" web-based program, known as the NWCA Optimal Performance CalculatorTM (OPC) to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Determine a lowest allowable weight class for each wrestler.
  • Establish a safe weight loss/weight gain plan.
  • Produce all necessary compliance forms.
  • Deliver the program to the scholastic and collegiate community for nominal cost.
  • Provide an opportunity for wrestlers to build a customized diet that honors their weight loss/weight gain plan.

In a day or two, coaches, parents and wrestler can all have access to that wrestler plan. I can assure you that all letters of the law established by the NFHS, NWCA and NJSIAA were strictly enforced by the working parties yesterday. All parties working the certification site yesterday attended a seminar the NJSIAA a few weeks ago to learn the process and everyone’s job.

I can tell you that I was very impressed with the kids. They were all very respectful, organized and well informed. I am sure that most coaches have stressed the importance of the test. The failure rate for non-hydrated athletes was very low.

All I can tell you that I am very excited for an excellent wrestling season! Bring on the weekend! I will be the Hanover Park Christmas Tournament on Saturday.

See you all soon and thanks for listening!
