Saturday early results

Whippany Park defeated Boonton today at Whippany. Steve Godine ended the match with a pin as Whipany clinched the colonial hills conference championship for the first time since 2000-01. This is the second conference championship for the wildcats, since the confernece went from 2 divisions to 1 confernence! Congrats coach Kaiser and teh wrestlers from Whippany.

The best Friday yet?

This maybe the best weekend thus far in HS sports! The MCT begins; Wrestling conference championships are on the line as Boonton travels to Whippany Park; Hanover Park travels to Mendham and Mt. Olive heads to Roxbury. Neither Hanover or Mendham have a conference loss. Mt. Olive needs to win after losing to Livingston. Roxbury is undefeated. Whippany is undefeated and win over Boonton secures a tie. Whippany Still has Cedar Grove, so either a win over Cedar Grove or Kinnelon secures a conference championship for Ficchi and his bunch. Boonton has been on a roll and win gets Kinnelon back in the picture. Kinnelon and Boonton still have to square off.

Friday’s MCT Results: Montville boys used a last second victory to knock off IHC-Iron team Mt. Olive. That makes two straight great wins for the Mustangs. Montville had two scorers in double figures: Mike Todesco with 12 an Matt Vinci with 11. Montville improved to 6-9.

Girls MCT: Villa Walsh improved to 11-3 with a victory over Morristown-Beard. The Vikings lead 30-18 at the half and took in 20 from Tracy Borsinger. Mendham overpowered Dover 56-9. Roxbury knocked in 29 in the 1st quarter on way to a 30 point victory over St. E’s.

Delbarton and Morris Knolls both won in ice hockey action. The Green Wave used 21 saves from Mike Infante and goals from four different players.

Chatham made the IHC boys race a bit more exciting after defeating Par Hills 75-44.

Tons of fun action today. We’ll see you tomorrow!

What's Happening

Yesterday’s news:

Girls Baskets: Mount Olive led by two moving into the fourth quarter. The Marauders connected on free throws late in the fourth and were able to hold off a comeback attempt by the Eagles. Breezy Rush led Morris Knolls with 13 points. For Mt. Olive, Kayla Cilenti scored 6, Steph Danzy added 11, Autumn Harnisch contributed with 7, Nicole Muller added 8, and Kim Cochran scored 4. Both schools hold a 5-8 recording moving into their Count Tournament games. Both teams face tough opponents on Saturday. The Marauders travel to Whippany Park and Knolls meets division foe Randolph.

Parsippany avenged an early season loss to Morris Hills. The Red Hawks outscored the Scarlet Knights 12-1 in the final quarter. Hills won the first game in overtime. The Red Hawks trailed by 2 at the half and improved to 8-7 on the season. Parsippany squares off with Pequannock on Saturday. The Panthers were knocked off by Montville yesterday and will look to rebound with a MCT victory Saturday. Morris Hills will face Montville and the 5-9 Mustangs may just have enough to knock off the Knights. Both games will be very competitive.

How competitive is the IHC-Hills? West Essex beat Hanover last week. Par Hills and Chatham knock off West Essex. Mendham and Summit go toe to toe with Mendham winning by 6 at Summit, 60-54.

Morristown-Beard defeated Kent Place 35-25. The Crimson travel to Villa Walsh today for some MCT action. The three photos below are from the Kent Place - Mo. Beard game. Other pics from the game can be seen at: http://www.shaleridge.net/

Boys Hoops: West Morris mixed things up a bit in the IHC-Iron. Randolph had just knocked off Columbia and out come the Highlanders to put a damper on the Rams parade. West Morris should their capabilities and came through with the upset last night. The theme this year, for many teams, has been – win the big game, get the upset, then lose the next. The Highlanders need to stay focused and remain consistent if they hope to advance over Kinnelon on Saturday.

Montville knocked in 64 last night in a 64-48 victory over Pequannock. The Mustangs used a 21-6 fourth quarter to secure the victory. Maybe the Mustangs can use this as momentum and advance with a win over Mt. Olive?

Morris Hills maybe struggling lately, but a win’s a win. The Scarlet Knights used two free throws from Adam Katz to edge the Red Hawks from Parsippany. The Scarlet Knights potent offense was held in check. The Knights need to regain their high scoring presence if they plan on making a run in the MCT.

Delbarton stormed back, scoring 22 points in the final quarter, but the Green Wave could not overcome the lead built by DePaul. DePaul is responsible for two of Delbarton’s 4 losses and one of Mendham’s two.

Ice Hockey: Hanover Regional mounted a come back with under a minute-thirty to play. Training by two, Regional scored two goals in thirty seconds to earn a tie against Roxbury. For the second time this week, Morristown mounted a valiant comeback. The Colonials trailed 2-0 midway through the second and scored 3 unanswered goals to secure a 3-2 victory over Madison. Early this week, Morristown trailed Mt. Olive 3-0 and 4-2 before scoring three goals in the final 2 minutes to win 5-4.

Wrestling: Mt. Olive topped Hopatcong 45-30. Tom Licciardi outscored Nick Pastore 12-10 to help aid the Marauders.

THE MCT: Prelims start off today, Girls Hoops gets underway today at Villa Walsh. The Vikings host Mo-Beard at 4:00. Villa edged DePaul yesterday 27-26. Dover travels to Mendham and St E’s is at Roxbury. One game today for the Boys, Montville travels to Mt. Olive at 7:00.

Regular season action: Chatham boys and Girls square off with Par Hills. Both games should be exciting and both are very important games in the conference race. Par Hills Boys have knocked off Mendham and Chatham looks to win here and even out the race.

Morristown-Beard and Morris Knolls will fight it out at Mennen at 5:45. Delbarton and Pope John will be at Skylands at 7:45. These are two great match ups between 4 of the states top teams.

Coach Carchietta will be working at the Morris County Middle School Wrestling tournament and getting a preview of Morris County finest up and coming grapplers. This endeavor will keep me from covering any games this weekend.

From Wednesday

Chatham Bowling - Coach Ortiz
Yesterday, the CHS varsity was defeated by Morris Knolls in the final round of the NJBL tournament, 7-0. CHS did receive their championship plaque for finishing in first place for the league. Stop by the front office to take a look. Brandon Schindler also earned the high average and high series awards for the league. Brandon Schindler and Tommy Magers made first team all-conference as well. Congratulations to the team on their achievements this year. The high scores for yesterday were:
Captain Jim Chatterton with a 202, Brandon Schindler with a 211, Tommy Magers with a 257, Ian Lerner with a 217 and 231, and Matt Schneider with an amazing 252.
Chatham Men's Indoor track - Coach Heffernan
At the Morris County Track Championship the boys' team took an impressive 4th place last night. The Cougar assault was lead by Junior star Scott McCullough. Scott not only took the gold in the high jump he also placed in the hurdles. Mike Bracken and TJ Lavelle unleashed their blazing middle distance speed as they both garnered bronze in the 600 meter run. Early in the evening Greg Leonard set the pace for the Cougars taking third in the 1600. The last event for the Cougars, the 3200, provided an epic battle as James Grimes ran against some of the best distance men in the State. James strong 4th place rounded out the Chatham scoring.
Chatham Women's Indoor track - Coach Ferguson
Biz Shenk represented the ladies in fine fashion again last night at the Morris County Track Championships! Biz earned all of Chatham's points at the meet with two fifth place finishes in the 300m dash and the 600m run. Way to go, Biz!

Before I start, I seriously need to ask … who is Trinity Christian and when did they start competing in Morris County Sports!? Are they recognized by the NJSIAA? Do they have other sports? Is this the same school as Parsippany Christian? Do they have other sports, and if they do, why do they not compete in that County Tournament? These are things that I’d like to know.

From Tuesday

Bowling – from Coach Ortiz at Chatham

Only one more day to go....

Yesterday, the CHS varsity bowling team advanced into the final round of the NJBL play-off tournament. The team defeated Seton Hall Prep, 5-2. The finals are tomorrow against Morris Knolls. This team has achieved so much this year!! The high scores for yesterday were:
Chris Schneider with a 213, Captain Jim Chatterton with a 201 and 218, and Ian Lerner with a 222 and a 202.

Hanover Park 55 (10-2), Mendham 54 (10-4)

Mendham was in control late in the second quarter when Hanover closed the half with 9-0 run to take a 1-point lead into the locker room. The Hornet scored the next 6 point of the 3rd quarter and lead by as many as 9 before Mendham mounted a strong 4th quarter comeback. The Minutemen trailed by 4 with under a minute left to play. A three by Brezden VanOrden and a two gave Mendham the one point lead with about 16 seconds to play.

Hanover broke the 1-3-1 press, crossed half court and called time out with about 8 seconds to play. The inbounds play went to Lindsey Cassinis. Cassinis scored the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds. (that 1.8 remaining.

The Hanover win and a Chatham victory over West Essex really mixed things up in the IHC-Hills. The Hornets have one loss and West Essex, Chatham and Mendham all have 2. It should be a great race to the end.

Hanover Park (10-2) 9 17 20 9 -- 55
Mendham (10-4) 12 15 13 14 -- 54

MCT Boys Preview

(16 – Boonton & 17 - Morris Catholic) vs. 1 - Par Hills

Boonton came out of the gates on fire. The Bombers were 3-0 to start the season and 5-3 in their first eight, although one of those losses was a forfeit during the Pequannock Christmas tournament. Many prognosticators expected more from Morris Catholic. The Crusaders have recently upended Pingry 57-46 improving to 6-8. This should be a very closely contended game, but potent Matias Roibal will be key to Bombers victory. Prediction: Bombers

(9 - Mtn Lakes & 24 – Butler) vs. 8 – Roxbury

The Bulldogs have been struggling all season and the Lakers will be another tough obstacle. Mountain Lakes has won five of the past 6 going into University. Look for the Lakers to move on. Prediction: Mountain Lakes

(12 - Hanover Park & 21- Morris Knolls) vs. 5 - Mo-Beard

Hornets were up by double digits before the Eagles made a fourth quarter comeback in December. Matt Shellenhamer will be able to compliment Steve Frankowski and give the Hornets a second victory over the Iron Division foe. Prediction: Hanover Park

(13 – Pequannock & 20 – Parsippany) vs. 4 – Delbarton

Pequannock started off 6-0 and has since dropped six of the last seven. Pequannock needs to get back to early season form if they have any chance to advance against the Hills Division opponent. Parsippany, also on a slide, has lost four straight coming in to the week. One thing for sure, the winner of this game needs to step it up if they plan on giving Delbarton a game. Prediction: Pequannock

(14 – Kinnelon & 19 - West Morris) vs. 3 – Chatham

The Highlanders ran into a bulldozer in their schedule over the past 3 games, East Orange, Columbia and Seton Hall are all state powerhouses. The Highlanders are capable of some great things, but have only managed 4 wins during a rough schedule. The Colts are on fire and have won 6 of their last 9, including a 9-point victory over Boonton and a close loss to University. West Morris’ harsh schedule will prepare them for this match up. Prediction: West Morris

(11 – Madison & 22 - Dover) vs. 6 – Randolph

Madison may not be happy with their record thus far, but if one thing can make a season, it’s a run in the County Tournament. Dover has show signs that they can pull an upset, but Madison is ready to make some noise. Prediction: Madison

(10 - Morris Hills & 23 - Whippany Park) vs. 7 – Morristown

The Scarlet Knights guards will have to outscore Ashok Vegesna and Ricky Growe. Morris Hills can put point at will and the Wildcats will have to play exceptional defense to shut down Katz and Dudek. Prediction: Morris Hills

(15 -Mt. Olive & 18 - Montville) vs. 2 – Mendham

Montville has notched wins against Madison and Parsippany. The Mustangs needs to be on top of their game against the Marauders. Mount Olive has already beaten Roxbury (the 8 seed) and plays a very tough schedule. Prediction: Mt. Olive

Morris Twp, NJ – If you had told Mt. Olive that today’s game against was meaningless, they would have easily ignored you and walked away. Morristown has already clinched the Charette Division title. Morristown had already beaten the Marauders 7-2 in the first meeting. Packing it in was not the idea for the eager Marauders. It may have been attacking, strong fore-checking and winning loose pucks.

Four minutes had passed before both teams opened up the play. Before that, a few light shots and a lot of body play eased both teams into play. But before you could blink, John Belamente took a pass in the high slot and walked in one on one with Morristown keeper, Ben Rennie. Belamente picked the top corner for a 1-0 Mt. Olive lead. It wasn’t long before Belamente found that same little corner of the net. A stranded puck lay just inside the circle off a face off deep in the Morristown zone. Belamante picked up the dormant puck, weaved between two defenders and picked the top shelf again. Mt. Olive took a 2-0 lead into the locker room thanks to a few key saves by Mt Olive Keeper, Dan Gillette. Morristown’s Steve Genualdi went end to end and was robbed by Gillette on a breakaway. Genualdi hit the post again and the ensuing rebound was smothered. The best save of the period occurred with under a minute left and the Mauruders shorthanded. Colonial Junior, Joe Stellato was in the right spot just above the crease to wrist a deflection on net. The quick shot was smothered by the sharp Gillette. All 11 shots the Colonials peppered Gillette with were saved.

The Colonials still had a 1:05 advantage starting the 2nd period. Morristown came out firing, but all shots missed the net and Mt. Olive was 1-0 on penalty kills. Mt. Olive took a 3-0 lead on
Dominic Potente’s goal with 8:47 left to play in the second period. Morristown was able to break through when Trey Peacock connected off a well executed two on one. Steve Genualdi fed Peacock who was able to beat Gillette above the blocker. Both teams returned blows before you could announce the goals. Belamente answered just thirty-five seconds later and Mt. Olive regained a three goal advantage. Only twenty seconds after Beamente’s goal, the Colonials cut the lad back to two. Senior Adam Barberio knocked in a loose rebound and closed the seconds period flurry leaving Morristown down two at the intermission.

Both teams pressed in the third and the first 9 minutes went scoreless. Both keepers cam up big. Ben Rennie was forced to make an acrobatic save as the puck deflected wildly off his own defenseman. Rennie turned in another block off a centering pass by Genauldi. The Colonial keeper stoned the open wrister from the slot. Gillette had to come up big a few times and was strong while the Marauders were short handed, which was twice during the final period.

Trey Peacock put the Colonials within one with 3:24 left to play. The freshman’s second goal of the game made the score 4-3. A shot by Dan Donofrio was deflected #15 and whiffled around Gillette’s block, knotting the game up at 4 with only 1:01 left on the clock.

Gillette came up huge again with under a minute to play, stoning a 2-1 break away. The rebound squirted loose and was juggled around before Joe Stellato fed Steve Genualdi to cap a remarkable comeback in the final 3 minutes. Ben Rennie came up with a save and cover with 10 seconds left. Morristown won the face off, cleared the zone. An icing with one second left enabled the Marauders one last face off deep in the Colonial zone, but Mt. Olive was unable to get a shot off.

Looking at the MCT - Girls Prelim's

Tracking the MCT Preliminary games

The seeds and match up’s for the 2007 MCT are all set. Let’s take a look at the preliminary match ups. These games are set to be played this week, although really only need to be played on or before February 2. Most teams set aside Saturday, January 27 for this game. The Round of 16 is to be held on the February 3rd at the higher seed.

The top 7 teams have received byes until February 3rd. (1) Morris Catholic; (2) Mountain Lakes; (3) West Morris; (4) Hanover Park; (5) Morristown; (6) Kinnelon; and (7) Chatham.

Here are the previews as of Sunday January 21, starting with games from the top of the brackets:

#17 Par Hills at #16 Boonton: Boonton comes in at 8-6 and is sporting a 3 game winning streak and is lead by Jen Vasta. The junior is averaging 13 points a game and has put up double digits nine times this season. The Boonton will face Newark-Arts on Tuesday and Mountain Lakes on Friday; both early season losses for the Bombers.

Par Hills holds the upset of the year, thus far. The Viking knocked off an undefeated and first place West Essex on Friday. The next day, the Vikings suffered a 56-47 loss to Jefferson. The Vikings are 3-8 and match up with Weequahic and Morris Hills before Saturday’s match up. Bella Galvez has averaged just about 14 points in her last two games for the Vikings.

Prediction: Look for the Lady Vikings to slow down the Bombers, who are averaging 43 points a game. Par Hills.

#26 Dover at #8 Mendham: Both Hills Division teams, this will be meeting #2 of the season out of 3. Mendham has already knocked off the Tigers by 23, a 58-25 victory on 1/12. Mendham is now healthy and stronger. The Minutemen have won 6 straight and 8 of the last 9.

Prediction: Mendham beats Dover for the second time this season. Mendham

#25 Madison at #9 Butler: This sets up two games in 3 days between the Suburban Division foes. Butler took the #9 seed despite an overall 11-1 record. Butler topped the Dodgers by 32 on December 19th. Madison’s only win has come over Dover. Can the third time a charm for the Dodgers?

Prediction: Butler will keep its part of that bargain and sets up a great Quarter-finals with Mendham. Butler

#21 Montville at #12 Morris Hills: Montville has lost 5 of the last 6 walking into the seeding meeting. The Mustangs are 3-7 on the season and have just lost to Hills Division Parsippany. Morris Hills has beaten Parsippany, but ironically the Scarlet Knights are 0-3 at home. Throw in the Christmas Tournament that makes the Knights 1-4 on their home court.

Prediction: Look for the Scarlet Knights to take this one. Morris Hills

#20 Mt. Olive at #13 Whippany Park: Mt. Olive has been held under 30 points in 5 of their 11 games. The Marauders have lost two straight since defeating Livingston and Glen Rock on January 12th and 13th. Whippany is 7-6 but has been in 4 of their 6 losses. The Wildcats have scored 49 or more in all their wins. The Wildcats have had scoring help lately from Kelly Griffith and Jocelyn Wilson when teams focus on Devin Feeney.

Prediction: The Wildcats excel at holding teams to low outputs. Defense is key in this match up, and Mt. Olive can come through with an upset here. Whippany Park

#19 Pequannock at #14 Parsippany: Pequannock comes in at 5-6 and the Red Hawks are 5-5 (entering this week). The Red Hawks are coming off a 54-36 victory over Montville. The Panthers had won three straight before dropping one to Villa Walsh. Pequannock had edged Montville back on December 20th and will need Lisa Martin and Nicole Ramirez to put up double digits if they want to pull the upset.

Prediction: Both teams are improving, but Parsippany is right there. The Red Hawks gave Chatham a run for their money earlier this week and maybe be peeking at the right time. Parsippany

#22 Morristown-Beard at #11 Villa Walsh: Villa could easily have been a top 10 seed. The Vikings have beat Butler by double digits at Butler, but hold an 8-3 record overall. The Vikings can score and have topped 42 points in all of their wins.

Prediction: Look for Villa Walsh to hit 50 points and advance. The victory sets up a rematch of the Colts Round Holiday tournament with Kinnelon. Villa suffered a 44 defeat to the #6 seed and maybe looking to for revenge. Villa Walsh

#23 St. Elizabeth’s at #10 Roxbury: The Academy of St. Elizabeth’s has had a few close losses, (7 to Lakeland, 2 to Pingry, 1 to DePaul), but Roxbury is a much stronger team. Roxbury has a tough schedule and will not over look a MCT game.

Prediction: Roxbury is a young team and this may affect the Gaels early in the game. The Gaels host East Orange on Friday, but should be able to come back strong on Saturday. Roxbury will pull away in the last 2 quarters. Roxbury

#18 Morris Knolls at #15 Randolph: Randolph has beaten Knolls early this week. The Rams better the Eagles 36-33. Candice Sphock can score and has held the leading scoring role while the Rams wait for Kathleen Naddiff to return from an injury. Throw Naddaff back in the picture by Saturday the Rams maybe able to get another one. Knolls had led the game at the half and may not be happy about letting that one slip away. This should be a great game.

Prediction: This is the toughest game to call. These teams know each other, no matter who is on the court and it’s a rivalry that adds fuel to the fire. Naddiff is solid on the boards and masters the put back, if she’s back, that’s the difference. Randolph

You can see that favorites and higher seeds are easy to pick. Par Hills, Mt. Olive and Morris Knolls can very easily pull an upset. You’d like think it’s that easy – but – it was a week of upsets in Morris County … Who’s the next Par Hills?

Schools that reach the Quarterfinals will play either at Morris Knolls or Kinnelon. The Semi-Finals and Finals will be held at FDU in Madison, as they have been for years. The Semi’s are dated for February 16, 6:00 and 7:30. The Final match will be February 23 at 7:00.
