Saturday's Stuff

Read about Whippany’s win over Bernards: http://morriscountyhssports.net/

Madison continues showing strength

Madison went into the Paul J. Finn, Jr. Memorial Tournament knowing that they had a date with destiny against NJ Top 10 David Brearley. The only way to get an opportunity to square off with the talented Bears was to earn it. Earn it, they did. The Dodgers handled Verona in the opening bout. The first win moved the Dodgers to the front gym and match against host Millburn. All Teams assembled in the front gym and watched a 15 minute documentary about Paul Finn. The presentation entitled “Gentle Giant” was ESPN worthy and should be sent to the NJSIAA hall of fame. The touching film motivated many and touched all.

Madison had many motivations. A focused Dodgers’ turned in a dominating 50-20 victory over the Millers. Madison opened to a 23-0 lead before giving up a team point.

Story will be up on Sunday – You can read about Paul Finn – 1978 state champion from Millburn : http://morriscountyhssports.net/html/mad_50_-_mill_20.html

It was great meeting some really nice parents from Madison today! The best was the grandmother of a Madison Wrestler who tells me that she checks the site everyday! Thank you.

Please note that you may need to refresh when you arrive at my site - http://morriscountyhssports.net/ - if the site does not look updated, just refresh your browser. I update it at least 5 out of 7 days a week.

The Wrestling top 10 will be much different this week, and I love changing it! I can assure everyone that Madison will up.

Wrestling

Randolph 39 (8-5), Seton Hall Prep 35 (9-7)

Randolph 37 (10-5), Morris Knolls 36 (9-5)

-- I have been on the Randolph bandwagon all year – maybe its because I want a free appetizer from Fausto at his new Restaurant right next to my house!! Either way – The NJ Bar and Grill is the place to eat if you want a family atmosphere, great food and many TV’s for watching sports while you relax!

But how about Knolls knocking off Seton Hall Prep. The match with Randolph must have been amazing:

Morris Knolls 37 (9-4), Seton Hall Prep 32 (9-8)

This is just great stuff!

Boys Hoops:

Madison 61 (6-6-0), Fort Lee 57 (6-7-0)

Boonton 38 (6-6-0), Verona 34 (3-11-0)

Madison and Boonton are keeping their play-off hopes alive!

Any more upsets!?

Why do they play the games?

It always looks good on paper … but anything goes once the clock starts. The “upset” theme continues:

Sometimes teams may have a game circled. Their entire season is focused around getting to that game. Winning that game may be the most important thing on their minds. Winning that game is important, but the next game is really the most important.

The Iron Hills-Hills division just heated up. West Essex, Chatham, Hanover Park and Mendham will all have plenty to say in the next few weeks, thanks to Par Hills:

Parsippany Hills 38 (4-9-0), West Essex 36 (10-1-0) – from njo.com

A couple things from Wednesday

** NJO had posted that they were going to live play by play -- anyone see it?

Maybe not an upset to most, but Mtn. Lakes Ice Hockey is coming on strong. Read about their win over Morristown-Beard from the Daily Record

Upsets are not always wins #1: Madison Ice Hockey (2-8-2) ties Roxbury, 1-1.

Upsets are not always wins #2: Mendham Ice Hockey (5-6-3) ties Pingry, 4-4. The Big Blue had established themselves with Mennen Division teams and edged up in the state rankings to #9 ... Mendham earned the tie in divsion play.

Another upset! #1 Morris Wrestling team gets upset? If there weren't enough upsets yesterday, this wrench just sent a train to a complete stop:

Upset day

Boys Hoops: Par Hills defeats Morris #1 Mendham. Mark Kitchen's Article

Girls Hoops (near upset): Delbarton needed overtime to avoid a confernce loss to 5-6 Caldwell. The Chiefs erased an 8 point halftime deficit to send the game into bonus time.

Girls Hoops (near upset): Whippany Park had already gave Mtn Lakes a scare, yesterday, the Wildcats stayed within a few points of the high scoring Colts. Whippany held Kinnelon to a season low and only 11 points at the half.

Girls Hoops (not really upsets): East Orange gave West Morris their 1st loss of the season. West Essex remained undefeated when the Scarlet Knights handed Hanover Park their first conference loss and second of the year. Hanover pulled with one, but could not regain the lead. Reference to Hofmann's "Future of Wrestling"

You may already know my feelings on this issue.

From that post (http://morriscountyvarsity.blogspot.com/2007/01/some-night-time-thoughts.html)

Things I think about:

Why did the NJSIAA shorten the Wrestling season? Was it to insure that the states are held in Atlantic City? Was it running later into Spring Sports? Football goes almost 2 practice weeks into winter sports. By the time those player report, it’s already scrimmage time. I just do not get some things.

Joe Hofmann at the Daily Record has looked deep into this issue, and since Joe is a well-respected expert in the Wrestling World, you should definitely take a read: Joe's Article

You will see how a handful of coaches feel about the new rules and issues among the wrestling community. You will read about the dissatisfaction amongst coaches. I do not know if anyone can blame the convention center for hosting the A-10 tournament above high school wrestling. In the eyes of the convention center, the A-10 hoops tournament will probably bring in more money, national TV coverage and provides a few more days of usage. Why does the state use a state facility? I was not there when the NJSIAA decided, but I am sure that it was the most convent deal, probably the best deal for the NJSIAA financially and the convention has been good to H.S. wrestling, so they may have been due first offer. Do I condone it? Do I think that it is the best venue? Tough to say.

I am going to tell you that I agree with Dover Coach Sean Bullock. Start the season a week earlier. If you start Ice Hockey and Swimming early because it betters usage of needed facilities, then it is obvious that you want to add a week at the start to the wrestling schedule that was lost due to the state tournament change. Why not? The maximum wrestler match count has been increased, so now you have more matches in one less week. See the snowball effect? You now force coaches to hold Quads. You all know how I feel about quads. They maybe fine once during the season, near the end, but every weekend? How many fans are you drawing at 10 a.m. on a Saturday? Who are we making the sport better for? The kids? Now that the Thanksgiving Day game is a memory, it may be a good idea. Oh, consider that many south jersey schools use still have Turkey-day games, this may not be as easy as you think.

I also agree with coach Lodato of Par Hills. I do think a coach could have said it any better. The idea gets wrestling on the right path, but kids do not want to hear it. Its difficult enough for a kid to take on the diet and work out plan, but then to add limitations to the regime may deter more kids. Wrestling seems to have declined in numbers the past few years, and the goal should be to promote wrestling. I know that coaches want an even, safe and fair playing field when it comes to weight management and this is the best we have. I actually like the plan. It will get better as the years progress, but I can tell that I have seen a far less nose bleeds than the past. The Wrestlers do not look as pale and sickly as they have in the past. So maybe we should look at this as aid to promote wrestling. You can present the case that a healthy weight loss plan is in place, by law, and can be viewed as a positive. It’s true that you have a “one size fits all” plan in effect, but it should continue to improve and once in place, maybe very beneficial.

As for cutting down weight? Tough, tough dilemma. Is it fair to schools that have 40-60 kids in their program to cut down to 11 or 12 classes? Or is it logical to expect a school of 450 kids (male and female) to supply a 14-person team? Even worse, do want to punish a small school that that can field 14 classes? Do you want to punish town programs that work so hard to build programs only to limit the number of wrestlers? Or is it time … has society changed so much that a sacrifices one has to make to wrestle successfully made the rules obsolete?

Do you meet in the middle? I wonder who remembers the 98 or 101 weight classes? No one misses them do they? Why not start at 105? Believe it or not, if weight 1000 high school freshman (males) I bet that you’ll see many of those athletic males weighing in at 103-107, more so than 98-102. Is 105 and 112 too little of a jump?

Morris County Youth wrestling is thriving and more popular than ever. Look at the Tri-county league and the North Jersey Wrestling League! http://tcywl.net/ & http://www.cardillo.ws/njywl/2006/ There is a middle school tournament next week with 14 schools attending. It’s not the rules handed down by the NJSIAA that damage to numbers, although they may not help. Somehow we need to keep the numbers from these youth programs. Believe me. I can understand a 15 kid that would rather show up the day after Thanksgiving and start running at basketball practice instead of watching weight to assure that he can be at his prime weight at the Hydration test. This is not an easy task that we face. But wrestling is a different animal. But how many other sports can offer you one on one competition, under a spot light in a packed house, so packed that the ref and the wrestlers cannot even hear the horn!? The pride and responsibility you bear when you step on the mat, representing your team is unmeasured in any other sport.

====================================

This may be the toughest top 10 in a long time. You know that dual meet wrestling is all about match up’s. You know that coaches look to move guys around to score the most points, while not giving up as many. There are times when myself and my expert sit down to make this top 10 and we do not even agree, not at all. You can realize how tough this was. Hanover beat Jefferson. Madison beat Hanover, but Madison lost to Delbarton. Keep going now – Jefferson beat Knolls. Knolls lost to Mt. Olive by a ton. Mendham kept it close with Mt. Olive (The #1 team). Mendham also was close with Jefferson and has a completely tough schedule. They’re schedule makes it difficult to rank them. I have been told that they belong in front of Knolls. I cannot drop Knolls for going 3-1 in a week. So until I get more info and a few more results, you only get top 3:

  1. Mt. Olive
  2. Roxbury
  3. Randolph

The week in Review

Monday: The week kicked off Monday with Hanover Park and Morristown-Beard turning in victories. The Hornets, lead by Lindsey Cassinis’s 12, used a 28-13 halftime lead to cruise to a 54-36 victory. The Crimson, who held Kent place scoreless in the second quarter, was lead by Shanice Johnson. The win evened Morristown-Bread’s record at 4-4. Also improving to 500 for the season, the Butler wrestling program used a 39-30 victory over Ramsey to even up at 5-5. The bulldogs used four straight pins from 171-285 from Jason Pauloski, Joe Taggart, Kevin McFall and Joe Stanich. In other wrestling action, Morris Catholic lost to Kushner Academy by 10. In hockey action, Morristown-Beard skated to an impressive took a 2-1 victory over Bergen Catholic. The Crimson improved to 5-3-2. A surprising tie for the Scarlet Knights of Morris Hills tied Mountain Lakes 2-2. Another tie, maybe not as shocking came when Mendham & Morris Knolls ended 2-2.

The only wrestling match of the night saw the Colts of Kinnelon challenge perennial strength North Warren. Kinnelon lost 54-21, but remain undefeated in the CHC.

Wrestling: West Morris 39 (2-4), Livingston 37 (2-7)

Wrestling: Whippany Park 59 (4-0), Verona 15 (5-6)

Notes: Wednesday is a wrestling night in Morris County. Boonton is getting stronger as the season progesses and turned in a 28 point victory over MKA. Nick Questa (0:51), Joe Marshello (0:28) and Nick Petonak (0:56) registered sub-one minute pins for the Bombers. The Dodgers put up 42 on a decent Montville team. The Mustangs were just coming off an impressive victory over West Morris. Morris Hills registered a shinning victory over West Essex. The Rockaway school forfeited the final two matches and still won by 6. Some coached picked West Essex as the pre-season favorite to win the Hills Division. Par Hills took a home a much need victory over a strong Dover Tigers squad. The Vikings took an 18-0 lead out of the gate (starting at 119) with pins by Jake Smith, Ben McNeil and Joe Molloy. Tim Shevelove turned in a 10-8 decision over Chris Ralloand and a David Hannes pin put the Vikings in good shape. Joe Melenka outscored John Lalo of Dover, 8-6. That gave Par Hills 30 points before taking a forfeit at 285 for the 36 points needed to secure the victory.

How about Pequannock? The Panthers improve to 8-2 with a 42-30 win over Delbarton. No one will see how impressive this win is, until you see Saturday’s results. Roxbury came away victorious from one of the most heated rivalries in Morris County Wrestling history. The Gales beat Randolph 45-23. West Morris edged Livingston 39-37. Whippany Park remained undefeated with a 59-15 win over Verona.

Wrestling: Parsippany Hills 54 (4-3), Rutgers Prep 21 (4-3)

Notes: Hanover Park trailed 28-9 after Trevor Salvatore from Jefferson pinned Eric Fraley. An imperative pin by Joe Williams gave life to the Hornets and kept hopes of a team win alive. Doug Merringer did not lead until the final 10 seconds of the match and used a desperation reversal to give Hanover 3 much needed points. Charles Savino received a forfeit and the Hornets were with 4 with two matches left. Jordan Toma held off a comeback by Sam Peters and got the Hornets within 1 with a 9-6 victory. Freshman Mike Johnstone wrestled smart, aggressive and strong … smart being the key term. The win caps a great team effort and an excellent win.

Notes: I will wait to get all box scored from Saturday before I can make the top 10. Madison and Delbarton must have been a great match. Delbarton added a few nice wrestlers to their line up and could have just made the statement to walk into the top 10. The Green Wave will not pass Madison or Pequannock in my top 10, too many factors and other losses, but should be recognized. Whippany Park turned in an impressive 44 point victory over Morris Hills. Par Hills took another IHC victory beating Parsippany in the “Roy Baker Classic.” With the 1 point victory, the Viking win tied the series at 5-5. The Vikings took home 5 of the final 6 matches, including the crucial pin by Paul Cruthlow at 160, with only 59 second left in the third. Another bonus point that helped in the 9-0 victory by Ben McNeil at 125. Morris Knolls put up 40+ on both Kinnelon and West Morris. Mendham beat Nutley, but lost to an Alabama school and St. Ben’s. Boonton weighed in a few key guys down a weight and put up 45+ in their two victories.
