Finals

103- Pete Tropona (Pq) pin Charles Savino (HP); 1:08

[Tropona, a four year Varsity Wrestler at Pequannock started off his senior year on the great note. The #1 seed received a bye and pinned West Morris’ Joe Sweeney at 1:34 of the second period to earn his spot in the finals. Freshman Charles Savino from Hanover Park pinned Freshman Pat James from Mt. Lakes in 3:03 and beat a talented Nate St. Elme from Rahway 5-3. Savino is one of many talented freshmen on the Hornets’ squad.]

112- Joe Ortiz (Par) pin Mark Fleming (WM); 1:01

[The Pack Freshman seemed to surprise most and won over the home town crowd after beating Top seeded Juan Herrera from Rahway. Mark Fleming trailed 7-2, but reversed the Rahway Senior to his back late in the 1st period. The very exciting 1st period ended tied at 7-7. Amazingly and unexpectedly, the second period remained scoreless. But Fleming was able to reverse the senior and earn back points to build a ten point lead and dominate the third period. The first two victory’s of the freshman H.S. career came against Seniors. Flemming’s first win was a 2nd period pin over Mike Guidara from Mt. Lakes. Fleming ran into a strong and talented sophomore, Joe Ortiz in the finals and got caught midway through the first.]

119- Chris Cholish (WM) dec Mike Quinn (Par): 3-1
[Senior and returning District 1 runner-up, Chris Cholish pinned Pingry’s Rob Allen and Paramus’ Marc Cirello on his way to the finals. Cholish wrestled a solid, smart match on his way to victory over the #1 seed.]

125- Adam Fallacro (PV) dec Stewart Minaya (Rah); 6-2

[Hanover Park Freshman Anthony Johnstone pulled a last second victory to secure a bronze. His twin brother Michael took 4th at 119, losing a great, close match to Paramus’ Marc Cirello, 2-1. ]

130- Jude Tropona (Pq) dec Anthony Cirello (Par); 1-0
[Pequannock’s Junior Jude Tropona improved his career record to 53-18. Tropona took his second HP Tournament Gold in as many years when he held off Senior Anthiny Cirello. Tropona received a bye in the opening round and pinned Aaron Bonner at 1:10 of the second to advance to the finals.]

135- Ryan Wilson (Rah) pin Rich Szymczak (HP); :56

[The 2005 state champion pinned his way to his fourth HP Tournament championship. The senior from Rahway pinned Zach Shultis from West Morris in 25 seconds and Brian Jankowski from Paramus before pinning the Hanover Park Junior. Rich Symczak pinned the 7th seed Mike Martinson out of Pingry. Szymczak followed up his first win with a 9-2 victory over Mt. Lakes Junior Dan Rueben. Rueben pinned Alex Egan of Chatham 56 seconds into the quarterfinal match. Rueben took fourth, losing a tough bout to Brian Jankowski 3-2.]

140- John Maio (Par) dec Frank Paling (Rah); 14-2
[Hanover Park’s freshman Kyle Niedzinski took 4th, first beating Brain Robertson of Mt. Lakes before being pined by champion Maio. West Morris’ Eerek Prol, the 7 seed, upset the #2 seed Sean DeLuca from Pascack Valley 3-1. Prol was pinned by Rahway’s Frank Palling. The Pequannock senior took the bronze with a 1-0 victory over Niedzinski.]

145- Nick Ponomarev (Peq) dec Kevin Karcich (WM); 7-4
[The Pequannock Junior and 2005 District Champion started his 2006 campaign with three wins for the tournament championship. Ponomerev pinned Alex Beck of Mt. Lakes. Followed that up with a 17-8 victory over Hanover Park Junior Chris Tracey, before winin by decision over Karich. The fifth seed, Chris Tracey took third by pinning #2 seed Ryan Kennedy of Paramus.]

152- Jon Rizzitello (Par) dec Shane Brennan (ML); 9-4
[Brennen, a senior, took his third 2nd place finish in Hanover Park’s Holiday tournament. Last year’s district 9 champion pinned Rahways; Mac Cruz and beat Jeff Fricke of Chatham on his way to the finals. Kevin Stasiak of Pequannock pinned Pingry’s A]

160- Danb Zotollo (Par) dec Dan Smith (Ch) 5-2
[Dan Smith beat Hanover’s Mike Lomio 6-0, then Pequannock Josh Arnau 14-3. Arnua finished third after beating Mt .Lakes wrestler Austin DiMarco.]

171- Ron Landy (HP) pin Mike DeRisi (Par); 1:22
[Hanover Junior and being sent as for the first time as a Varsity starter, Ron Landy surprised all and sent the home crowd to an uproar as he pinned #1-seed Mike DeRisi from Paramus. Landy upset the #2 seed Joe Farrell of Pascack Valley with an 11-4 decision. Landy beat the #1, #2 and #3 seeded wrestler on his way to gold. Landy won a tough decision over Rahway’s Ricky Walsh 4-1. In the finals, Lany and DeRisi locked up. DiRici tried a throw, but missed on the move and Landy powered back through DeRisi. As DeRisi tried to get out of bounds, Landy was able to end up on top for the take down. DeRisi ended up getting to his stomach before giving up back points. As Dirici tried to inch out and get a restart, Landy caught the #1 seed with a three-quarter nelson and was able to turn the Paramus wrestler onto his shoulder. Landy had the pin, but DiRisi haad most of this right should over the line. Landy was able to pull him enough for the fall at 1:22 of the 1st period, pulling the upset of the tournament and definitely giving the home crowd a huge thrill.]

189- Shedirck Goodrich (Rah) pin Brendan Ward (Ch); 2:24
[Ward wrestled a hard fought match that had both wrestlers nearly catching the other on his back a handful of time. Goodrich was able to get enough balance and leverage to keep Ward on his back and got the quick pin. The #2 seed Ward beat West Morris’ Sal Carfaro 10-5 and pinned Pascack Valley’s Steve Gandolfo at 1:40. Carafo won his next two matches and took 5th.]

215- Frank Stefanelli (WM) maj. dec Zac Flowerman (Pingy); 15-6
[West Morris wrestker Frank Stefanelli took home the gold from the 3-seed. The senior pinned Mike Suriano of Paramus at 30 seconds into the 3rd period. He followed that win up with a victory of Shawn O’Brien of Pequannock. The Pequannock Senior took home a bronze with a 4-2 victory over Mt. Lakes’ Francois Vandamn.]

Hwt.- Chris Raupers (PV) pin Kevin Yurinich (WM); 1:20
[The 6th seed from West Morris battled AL Fenske-Williams and won 15-10, then beat Paramus’ Dimantes Kyriakakis 5-1.]
