Boys MCT: Montville over Madison

Montville Survives, 1-0 in OT

#7 seed Montville scored with under one minute in the second overtime to beat #10 seed Madison and advance to the MCT round of eight.

Montville may have taken the Dodgers a little too lightly. If that’s the case, then the Mustangs were mistaken. Madison pressured early with Josh Lewis having to make two difficult saves. Lewis punched one shot just over the crossbar and dove on a ball to prevent a breakaway. The Montville defense led by Juan Pablo Correa and Ben Lewis was solid the result of the way, allowing only three shots on goal the entire game. The Mustangs best threat was when Sam Gehman dribbled just inside the 18 and rifled a shot that went off the crossbar. After a scoreless first half, Montville controlled the tempo but could not score. Gehman had another golden chance to score off a shot from 40 yards out that curved right swerved left, hit the underside of the crossbar, and was swept out of the net by goalie Perry Drew as it was on the line. The next opportunity for the Mustangs came when Montville was awarded a penalty kick. Kyle Feathers took the kick and shot to the lower right corner but Drew was there to make the save. Montville and Madison could not score, so we were headed to overtime.

In the first overtime, Montville controlled possession but still could not put the biscuit in the basket. There best chance came off a bicycle kick from Eukene Okrene that went just wide. In the second overtime, Mike Butrym received his second yellow card and was sent off. Then with under a minute to go and the game nearing penalties, Correa sent Gehman a long pass down the right side and Gehman dribbled past Drew and sent his shot into the back of the net as the Montville sideline rushed the field in celebration. Gehman gave all the credit to JP (Correa) for his goal, and said, “He had the easy part.”

After the game, Coach Myers of Montville stressed that his team must take be ready game and be a cohesive unit in order to advance in this tournament and keep winning games the rest of the season. The Mustangs had 13 shots on goal to the Dodgers 3. Montville now stand at 7-1-1 as Josh Lewis posted his seventh shutout with three saves, while Madison fell to 7-5. Montville will face Kinnelon in the next round of the MCT.
